what Fuel do you use?

I just bought a 91 legacy turbo and it says premium only, so i ask this, what octane do you use?

Well, I have a slightly different setup, but I would never use anything less than 91+ on a turbo car...

There is a reason the manual / gas cap says premium only. 91 and above is the only thing that should ever go in a Turbo Legacy tank.1990legacy wrote:it says premium only

Back when I was driving my Legacy, a 1991 Non-Turbo AWD, I was only putting 87 in.

I can get 85 here as regular unleaded, 87 as mid, and 89-90 as premium. Granted, I am at a higher altitude than most states other than Colorado, so it can be lower here.

And yes, you should run Premium in the Sport Sedan...
Turbo = more chance for detonation
Higher octane = less chance for detonation

94 (chevron) over kill?
went i went down to the states and had to use 92 (chevron) my car seemed to run the same if not a little bit better.
is there a chance im not burning all the fuel using 94?

Octane is used as an anti-combustant.
Basically, at high pressures and heat, low octane fuel will combust before the spark plugs fire- causing pre-detonation.
The amount or octane rating does not affect the amount of fuel being burned. That is set by the A/F mixture.

i run 92 premium because im still not intercooled and im running 12-13 pounds of boost.
im pretty safe about it. i throw a bottle of 108 octane in the tank to be safe every 20 25 gallons of gas.
if i only ran 87 fuel in my car no doubt i would blow my shit.

You may get .3 of a point of octane, if you are lucky

Shell or BP 92, or 91 non-oxy. Several friends and myself have had bad luck with Holiday and SA premium, not a consistant octane.
Fuel/timing maps are not interchangable with other fuels. Using a lower than reccomended octane is bad for obvious reasons. Using race gas or octane boosters is also bad for an engine that is not tuned for it. Running race gas on a pump tune causes the fuel/air mix to burn much later in the combustion stroke thus causing side loads on your pistons/rods. This is not desirable.

Mine's tuned for 94, but if unavailable it can live with 91 and the boost turned back to 10.
