Something in the engine.....

I am at the point of tearing down the motor that going into my rally car. When I got to the part where I flipped the motor over on the stand, I heard something loose in the oil pan. "Weird" I thought, and carried on. When I pulled the oil pan off, something fell back into the motor, underneath the baffle. Low and behold it was an oil squitter. I pulled the motor down completely and found it belonged to the #4 cylinder. You can see on the back on the piston where it banged around a little, then magically missed all the other rotating parts an fell into the oil pan. I can only imagine its been there awhile. Anyone else ever seen or heard of this before?. Just a thought.

Pretty damn common. My old roommate, RS25, had an EJ22T that had the oil squirter get loose and badly chew up the crank and one of the rods...

Either plug the galleys or put in a new squirter with red loc-tite

My oil squirters are gonna fall out? How can I prevent that?

they arent GOING to fall out

they may have, or might fall out...

Prevention? Take the heads off, take the pistons out, take out the oil squirters, put loctite on them, put it all back together :P

That sucks. I guess there isn't anything I can do about it besides rebuild the motor. I've never heard of this before either.
Anyone have a scan of how the oil squirters go in?

they just screw in at the base of the cylinder wall

Except you can't buy the squirters individually.

I stand corrected.

Maybe I should have said that you can't buy them individually NEW.

When I said new, I meant one that hasnt fallen through a crankshaft :P I should have been more clear

A lot of people who build EJ22T/EJ20Gs remove the squirters and plug the galleys for higher oil pressure at high RPM

Bumping an old thread. This same thing has happened to me. Flipped over an engine I was working on and I heard one loose. How bad is it if I don't replace the squirter and just leave it as is? Will my oil pressure be hurting?

I found mine in the oil pan when I rebuilt it. It might have contributed to the engine feeling old and tired. Im sure it would lower oil pressure a lot. If you are going to raise boost go in and fix it. If you dont want to tear it down make sure your oil pump is sealed up or get a fresh oil pump.

Sealed up as in check to be sure it's not leaking? I'm only nervous about attacking two things on a car - transmission and engine internals, so I'm trying to be cautious.

oil squirter

Hmmm I would probably use a magnetic oil pan drain plug till you recover the squirter. Short of tearing the engine in half the only thing you can do is make sure the oil pump can deliver all it can. If it hasnt been done to your knowledge remove the pump and reseal it. This "only" involves removing the timing belt and crank pulley. The oil pump rotor :/ cover screws on the back side can loosen too so I always threadlock them. I can email you the picture I put together.

Bumping for an answer on how much my oil pressure might change with a missing oil squirter...
