New to 4EAT, couple ??'s, guru's - school me

Post by skid542 »

Just like the title says. I'm having the shop flush the tranny and put new fluid in and a new filter. After reading up on the 4EAT I have discovered that the little filter looking thing beside my battery and my engine head is an auxillary external filter - yay :)! Does anybody know what the part number for this filter is? Can you buy a new filter or do you have to buy the whole kit? Any tips on replacing?

Further, our 4EAT's have their own filter aside from this auxillary one? Does anyone have a P/N for that?

I haven't searched this question, but - any fluid recommendations to use?

I'll be putting an external cooler on soon but want to do some reading up on those first before asking too many questions. But is that something that I will have to drain all my fluid to do such?

Thanks in advance.

I've spent the majority of the evening searching and reading old threads and think I have answered a few of my questions. Let me bounce my 'new' knowledge off you.

The internal filter/screen is best left alone. It was designed to be a life time item and messing with it can upset things considerably.

The external filter/screen can also be left alone though some people have changed them.

Right now I'm thinking just have the shop flush the fluid and put in some Redline. I really dislike changing tranny fluid and I'm not technically supposed to be doing maintaince in my garage so I'd prefere not to make any big red stinky stains....

So fresh fluid and I should be go?

Finally, one last AT question, when I'm in second gear and blip my throttle to drop it into Power mode and to down shift it will down shift and then rev up to about 4k and then grab, and grab hard - not like a clunk hard but a pretty solid rock the head back and go. I pressume this is normal?

Fresh fluid and go....yes

Yeah....you're description of the shift sounds about normal.

Great. That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm pretty new to the auto tranny's and I'm sure there will be more questions in the future :).

Thank you Josh.
