You probably have a bad coolant temp sensor...because when it fails the ECU automatically runs the fans

The one for the ECU, not the gauge then, I would assume...I'll check into it, thanks.

Huck,

Also, a bad vehicle speed sensor will also cause the fans to stay on.

The gauges aren't working correctly...so that may be it, as it's located in the instrument cluster like on a XT, right?

The Tach, nor Fuel gauge work on it, not the low fuel light either....but the temp gauge works fine...I posted a thread about those isses, but got no imput on the problem...

I guess I need to get a different instrumet cluster and throw in it to see if it fixes everything......

yeah.....the speedo sensor is in the combination meter (gauge cluster).

So if that isn't working, then that's likely the reason the fans are on all the time.

OK along the same lines as this thread heres what my legacy is doing , what would cause both fans to come on immediately when using any of the 4 buttons that involve the ac compressor ac,acmax,def/heat,def. This was done on 2 90 legacys both at operating temp in the driveway on a 35degree day, on the 1st I can use these bottons and the fans do not come on right away or at all depending on temp, when they come on they cycle on/off as needed. On the 2nd the fans come on right away and stay on untill I choose a mode that does not use the compressor, the status of this AC system is unknown at this time(to cold to know) but the the compressor does run. Status of 1st AC is A. O. K. So who has the malfunction? 1st or 2nd, me thinks 2nd Thats about it for info any Ideas

My Legacy does the same thing, both fans come on when depressing any of the AC buttons. It has always done this.

The question I ask you is, are the AC systems the same between the two Legacies? Or is one a Calsonic, and one a Zexel? Mine is a Calsonic.

Either way....what you're describing sounds normal, at least based upon what my car has done since I've owned it.

Thanks for the info, the ac compressors are different. O K new question, do the fans come on without the engine/ac compressor running, as in just the key on, 1st car no, 2nd car yes.....boy is this fun, good thing its raining cats and dogs

If the engine & AC is off, key on, and the car engine cold, the fans shouldn't be on. Is this the situation you're talking about?

O K, key in the on position, ac or acmax or def/heat or def button depressed, engine off, both fans on, doesn't seem right? Not a big deal, just having 1 legacy that doesn't do it and having another that does has me curious if there is a problem. Thanks for the input.

It's fine.

The reason one does it and one doesn't has to do with the AC system put in, and how it's wired up. That's the only reason. For some reason the Calsonics are wired to have both fans come on.
