when changing the filter what must you do to release the pressure in the fuel line?, or is it necessary to do this at all?
other than that, it's just 2 clamped hoses and a bracket right?
thanks in advance

you need to or it will squirt out gas, like alot of it too
unplug the wiring to the fuel pump, its under your back seat, just 2 bolts and the seat bottom is off, its right under there, cant miss it
then start the car until it dies, if it wont start just crank it a couple times to be sure theres no pressure
only takes like 10minutes to release it
the only hard part is that sometimes the hoses dont want to come off, but yeah, thats all there is to it

Or just let the car sit overnight and change it the next day before going anywhere. The pressure in the lines will be gone by then, or 99% of it will. Its always worked well for me.

That's what I do when I think ahead. Otherwise I unplug the pump...

They make plastic hose clamps that pinch the lines. They're cheap.

Whoah whoah whoah, my fuel pump was in the trunk, just
behind the rear seats. I have a '92 Legacy L sedan. It was below and oval plate--I may have a picture.
...
Okay here's how it was on my car when I did the fuel filter:
See? You're crazy.

It's been my understanding that you can unplug the fuel connector on ALL BC sedans under the back seat where Murphy has indicated. I could be wrong though.
If push comes to shove, just pull the fuel pump relay.

You can. the plug exists there on every BC sedan. Some people think it's easier to unplug it at the pump. Either way, the power has to leave the pump.

WTF, just take the filter off without relieving pressure. All that other stuff just wastes time.

Serious as cancer. You spend 20-30 minutes messing around removing the seat, unplugging the connector, running the car, replugging the connector, reinstalling the seat. It's a waste of time to me, but maybe I value time higher than some. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

It's easier in a wagon -- no stupid rear seat to mess with

.
I honestly don't feel safe squirting a bunch of gas into the engine compartment after I've been driving!

Serious as cancer,
gasoline is carcinogenic.
Don't change your fuel filter before depressurizing the fuel system, kids.
