Bad rear diff???

Well I am working on a 96l wagon. Every time I turn the car there is a horible vibration in the rear end so I put the fuse in for 2wd and no more vibration. Which tells me its in the back end some where so I have a used rear diff sitting in the garage. I empty the fluid today expecting to see metal shaving and chunks of stuff. All I see are some small particals of rust the megnetic plug has some chunks that look like rust to me? Is my rear diff bad?

Do you just mean metal shavings or truly rusty brown shavings? I would think that if there was low enough fluid that rust could develop that the thing's gone. Was it any better after filling it back up with fluid?

Auto or Manual? Could be Torque Bind.

I think only the the automatics have the 2WD fuse (correct me if I'm wrong).

Yah no metal shaving or shiny anything in the oil pan just what looks like chunks of rust. Some really small some not so small. Yes its an auto. It only does it when I turn not when I go in a straight line. I put some new fluid in today well se what happens when I get a braking issue resolved. Posibles areas to look at for torque bind?

my advice is you need to rebuild the rear output of the tranny, ie, the clutchpacks for the rear diff output.

Is there any write ups on how I do that sounds hard. Also Is it something in just the transfer case or the actuall tranny?

Ditto...your problem is with the rear extension housing clutch packs, not the rear diff.

Yah drove it this after noon the fluid change made no diffrence. When I turn it sounds like something is pulseing in the back one sec it will grab the next second it does not? Still think it is the rear extension housing clutch packs?

So I know its not duty cylinode c right casue it will go into 2wd with the fuse. Which leaves to the rear extension housing clutch packs. What is the dip stick on the right passinger side of the car for oposite of the tranny dipstick? I took it out and the oil looks low it smells and feels like gear oil?

That dipstick is for the front differential gear oil.
