is it worth the time and money to up grade the stock turbo to a WRX TD04?

I dunno. Might as well, since it's a new turbo.
Basically anything is better than a VF-11.

I thought the USDM TD04 was a just slight upgrade to a VF11.
Not sure if it is worth the trouble of installing this turbo on a car with a good VF11. If your turbo is blown then the story changes & you may as well put the better turbo in.
Freestyles's turbo chart shows a TD04 that blows 420cfm @14.7psi (15G), & another that blows 410 CFM @16psi (13T).
I suspect that one of these is the 90* inlet TD04 found on JDM EJ20Gs, I tried to figure it out once before but got no definite feedback.
The JDM 90* TD04 turbo should be more bolt in than the USDM version, any additional airflow vs the USDM td04 would be a bonus.

i'm new to the turbo world as well but i believe the td05 is better than the td04

Depends on what you consider better
the TD05H-16G has more potential for power than the TD04H-13G, but the TD04 will have a faster spool up, resulting in more lower end torque.

I have both the JDM TD04 & The TD05-16G, but I chose to use the TD04 for now because it will have better response on my 2.0 4EAT.
If I had a 5spd I would have probably used the 16G.
When I get a built 4EAT & my "Frankenmotor" (EJ22T/EJ20G Hybird) in the car I'll probably start off with a ported 16G for response eventually going to a GT30or35R for more top end power.

No
Its got a different compressor side

thanks! so the 13g 16g 20g (ect) is the size of compressor, and the td04 td05 (ect) is the turbo?? is YOUR td05 20g "handcrafted"? like i said PHAT motor!!!

build 1 for me too!!

Stupid TD04 is not holding boost past 4000-4500rpm. It holds 13-14 psi until 4500 then starts to drop boost ending at around 11psi @ 6000rpm. Not sure if this a a MBC problem, so I'll try my EVC to see if it will hold boost then, if it does not I'll put in my TD05 16G.
This is what the VF11's do.

TD05 and so on are just housings for the turbo they arent the actauly turbos.

They are Larger housings that contain bigger compressor & turbine wheels that can pump more PSI @ lower temps & turbo RPMs than smaller turbos (TD04).
There is still a smidge of hope for the TD04 on my car if the EVC can keep the boost consant, if it can't then the turbo cannot flow enough air to maintain boost levels @ higher RPMs.

This is what the VF11's do.
Same thing happened to me with my td04 and electronic boost controller/SMT6 setup. But I was able to achieve about 16PSIat ~ 4500rpm before it dropped off quickly to 11psi at 6000.

I ported my 16G today, it will probably go in the next few weeks.
I just want to try headers on the TD04 to see what happens to HP/accel. times.

I read a tread on NASIOC that discovered then went into details of the differances bet JDM EJ205 TD04's vs USDM EJ205 TD04s.
The JDM TD04 had a bigger turbine wheel - basically the size of a VF39....
The writer claims additional power can be felt with the JDM TD04.

Any idea if the USDM TD04 is upgradable to accept a JDM TD04 turbine? (I'd let DB or FP do the work)

I think they got a price of $300 from deadbolt for the wheel upgrade which is way too much $ to spend on a TD04.
Folks also put in the 16G compresser wheels into TD04's.
The + about this finding is that a JDM TD04 will probably sell for peanuts on ebay so we know what to look for.
Here is the NASIOC link

Wow, that's one hell of a thread to read through. I guess they put a lot of thought & research into the JDM vs. USDM turbo topic.

My finding on the TD04 not being able to hold boost through the RPM range was wrong. Between MBC restrictor issues & a small spike the car has I thought the turbo was not able to hold boost until redline.
Right now the TD04 is holding 15psi to redline with the HKS EVC (on a EJ20G) in the LSS, so I am going to port the turbo & install my EL Headers to see if those 2 things help performance on the TINY TD04.
When I get bored with the TD04 I'll put my ported 16G on the car, I'm curious to see what can be eeked out of that tiny turbo...
There are Foresters & WRXs running 12's on TD04s / TD04s + Meth which is pretty interesting.

With a TD04 is it easier to install a FXT TMIC?
I dont like the looks of the Saab 900s and from what I hear it is a pain to install a FXT TMIC with the 45* Angle outlet of the lil ol VF11...
So what is a fast spooling powerful turbo that is a fairly straight forward to install?

A VF11!!!! LOL!
I've had the Vf11 and the td04 on my car. They're pretty much the same.
I liked the sound of the old VF myself...
