GEARBOX CHANGE

Hello

I have a 1993 Legacy 4wd 2.0 Turbo, transformed in a Rally car, I take part in Regional Rally Championship in Algarve - Portugal. A week ago, I just broke the gearbox and i found a guy who has a 1990 Legacy 4wd 2.2 (No turbo) to sell. I,ve been trying to find out if the gearbox is similar to the one I have in my car, but I still couldn't find the answer. I wonder if someone could help me on that. If the gearbox is similar (It doesen't mater if the ratio is diferent) I will buy the car, I replace the gearbox and I have my problem solved, And then I have a whole new car for spare parts. But if the gearbox doesn't fit, I'll have to find other solution. The problem is I'm having a rally in two weeks time so I don't have much time...

It would be really great if someone could help me on this

Thanks

It will more then likely physically fit. However the gear ratio's probably are different, but the big thing is the clutch style is probably going to be different.

The non-turbo legacies (in the US) got a cable actuated (push style) clutch setup. The turbo cars got a hydraulic actuated (pull style) clutch setup.

You'd have to swap out the brake/clutch pedal assemblies, and in my opinion....I'd rather have the hydraulic clutch setup.

Hello

Thanks a lot, Josh!

The information you gave me is very usefull. I think I'll take the risk and buy this car to replace my gearbox, even if it's necessary to swap the clutch system. I'll go for this solution because I really don't have much time to other options. The car I have was imported from Germany, and this Subaru has never been commercialized in Portugal, so it's very difficult to get spare parts.

The other option I have is to buy the 2nd gear (the one I broke), but I just couldn't find anywere to do that.

Would it be possible to find that part in America?

Anyway, thanks for your quick answer. Congratulations for this forum, It's very nice to find a place where we can discuss things about the Legacy's.

I would like to post some photos of my car. How can I do it?

If you would like to check on my races, you can visit our rally team website: www.teamralisasul.com

The webpage is in portuguese only, but I think it's easy to navigate and there you can see some photos and videos of my car.

Best regards

It's possible you could try and find parts in America, but you may be better off looking in the UK, as Subarus are pretty big over there, and they probably got the model car you have.

I'd suggest checking out some of the UK subaru forums. I did a search on google, and
http://bbs.scoobynet.com/forum.php came up

To post pictures you need to have them hosted on a web server. You can email them to me, and I'll host them if you'd like.
