91 4wd legacy transmission 2 of 4 gears work

when I replaced my transmission, I think I damaged the front pump seal, which allows fluid to leak profusely, I couldnt afford transmission fluid at the time, yet continued to drive the car with no less than 4 quarts in the transmission.
for the first few days, I had 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and D. after a few more days, I only had 1st, and 3rd, though if I downshifted from D to 3rd, the car would downshift.
now, I have 1st, and if I dont let off the gas at the right time, I wont get 3rd until I shove it in neutral, rev the engine, and then shift back to D.
I know its only 3rd, and not D because of the speedometer reading, and rpm.
so my question is, I have another transaxle, with a blown front diff, but the transmission portion is fine, would anyone recommend me swapping the good transmission, to the good front differential?
one more question... if its covered in another thread, just send me the link if you would.
what is involved in swapping a 5mt into my 1991 Legacy 4wd L automatic wagon? wiring, linkage, etc...
thank you very much!
