4EAT rebuild

Considering doing a rebuild on my 4EAT which is slipping and not shifting under heavy throttle. I figure I might as well instead of buying a replacement in unknown condition. At least it would make me feel better about thrashing on it.
Has anyone done this themselves before? How hard is it to do? I've rebuilt 5-valve motorcycle engines before so I figure this can't be too bad.
Found two sources for rebuild kits:
http://www.drivetrain.com/subaru_dt.htm ~$300 stock rebuild
http://www.ipttrans.com./subaruauto.shtml#main ~550 performance rebuild
I found this place for a service manual (don't want to get the factory Subaru one for $$), but I'm not sure how complete it is:
http://www.levelten.com/store/import/import_manual.htm
Any advice is appreciated.
