Okay, so I'm looking to replace the stock stereo in the near future. I'm just replacing the front speakers and of course the central unit. Is there anything I should know about what kind to buy? Basically, all I care about is that I can plug my ipod into it, but I was just wanting to know about whether or not I need to get a certain size of unit cause the stock one is kinda boxy and weird. Any advice is appreciated. it's a 1990.

any aftermarket stereo will fit as long as you buy a kit for it.

it's basically just a little plastic 'gap filler' that will take up that space between the stereo and whatever is below it.

i believe its just a little storage compartment below it, mine has about a 1/4" gap between the CD player and that compartment, but the only way to see it is if you get down on eye level of the CD player, my CD player blocks the view of the gap when your sitting in a seat
actually i didnt know there was a gap until i was cleaning my car one day

Is any type of new wiring harness required in the installation?

i have always used i harness that plugs in place of the old deck. then you just wire that to the pigtail harness coming from the deck. the adapter harness shouldn't be very expencive at all $10 tops

yes there is some wiring involved especially if you want the dimmer to work.

Even using a stock subaru deck (05 wrx cd changer), I had to splice my harness and move a wire to get everything to work right.

My last deck was a piece of junk sony with an off the shelf harness adapter and it was at full brightness the entire time. It got really annoying at night.

I had help putting in a WRX HU but it was wired by hand, wire by wire with butt connectors. Turned out just fine. You can always get the wire schematic for your new deck and cut the piug and wire 'em in that way. Most of the manuals have wire designations and its doesn't take too much brainpower to figure out which ones to couple.
