So...whatcha think is the problem?

Alrighty...here is the scenario...

My VF8 (which I bought JDM...so it really doesn't have much in the way of mileage on it) has started to act up.

It doesn't sound any different than it did before, and it isn't full of oil inside, nor am I seeing any smoke from the exhaust...

BUT...

to make anything more than 6psi of boost, I essentially have to have my boost controller completely closed...so the actuator is not seeing any reference from the compressor housing of the turbo.

So...do you think my turbo is dying? Or is it just that my wastegate actuator needs an additional spring to hold it shut...

Also...as is common with VF Turbos (or at least from what I have seen) my wastegate flapper is loose on its arm...so that it rattles when you open the wastegate by hand...so do you suppose it could be leaking out exhaust and subsequently making it so my turbo can't do diddlysquat?!?

Fanks for your help in advance!

sounds like a problem with the wastegate.

My VF8 has a loose flapper too. Clanks a bit but works fine.

If I remember right Dscoobydoo had a small nick on one of his blades and his TD05 wouldn't hold boost...DR do I have that right?

Last time I checked, it was fine...and if it was rubbing it probably wouldn't sound exactly like it did before...

The Turbo is coming out on Friday...and I might weld the wastegate flapper and see aboot shaft play and whatnot.

My guess is it's the loose flapper. A stronger spring could help, or it could way overdo it. Try fixing the flapper first.

Boostleak ftw.

Do a boost pressure test

Well this sounds like something that i just ran into at work today, now i know this won't be the exact same setup seeing how i work on school buses and diesel but it might help, anyway this GMC 3500 was lacking power, to after checking the turbo to make sure it was good, we then thought it may be the wastegate, we found the wastegate wasn't getting vacuum to hold it closed to allow boost to build. we traced it back to a solenoid that wasn't sending the signal to open and close the vaccum to the wastegate, anyway replaced the solenoid and good as new.

hope that wasnt to long, hope it help, if not o well
