Bad idea to remove airbox on an auto ss?

when I was going to change my air filter i was thinking oh might as well get ride of the whole air box but then my friend told me its not a good idea on a auto turbo car because of the positive pressurized air within the airb......I lost focus after that cuz I couldn't understand.
but is it true? i see so many people talking about de-snork, removing airbox to breath better..etc.

what would it being auto and turbo have anything to do with it. it is the same as if it was manual, n/a, w/e.
if you want a cone filter get one, it is not the best choice as it has been discused meny times. but it shouldn't cause problems.

There isn't any postively pressurized air in the airbox...These cars are drawthrough...
But, I wouldn't remove the airbox...as it will not gain you any power to run a cone filter, in fact it could quite possibly lose power.

Unless you can mount the cone filter outside the engine bay, you're better off with the K&N panel filter in the stock location. You'd be drawing in warmer air with a cone filter vs. the air box pulling from the fender well.

With the snorkus removal the stock intake is essentially a CAI with a large filter. The surprising part is that many CAI have a smaller filter area than the stock panel!
Also I found a great thread on Nasioc with dyno charts showing there is little to no difference between an elbow tube and the "torque box" on later Subarus. I think the difference falls into the margin of error but it should give us piece of mind when removing resonators from the intake.

If you really want cold air, you don't have to remove the box:

Or you can remove the cover from the foglight-less hole in the bumper on post-facelifts. Some folks have even plumbed down there from the intake hole in engine bay...

More convoluted piping or you have to cut metal, also more things get kicked into it, and snow packed much easier.

Yeah, I'm going to have brake ducting there eventually anyway. Not going to plumb the intake - seems like overkill. Lots of air in the "stock" fender well if you leave well enough alone. Still those fog light hole covers pop right out with three screws enabling the scoop effect..
