Maybe it varied the amount of power-assistance on the steering?

That was on of the things the Legacy RS had. Very cool I believe it makes steering more responsive. Again one of the things our US Subaru's didn't have. Actually I think the 94 US legacy's had them. These cars had ALOT of goodies that most cars today don't have with the JDM versions and were subaru fast. Especially the Legacy RS-RA.

You, what ericem said. It adjusted the valvebody inside the steering rack, or the pump I think.
There were so many parts on JDM and EDM cars we never got.
Every week I find a new part.

A few things our USDM vehicles should have had.
power folding mirrors, fog lights, EJ20TT motor, entire skirt package, and the sporty steering button.......
Yet we didn't, and I ask why

I just got the folding mirrors from JDM Hot...
(And she IS kinda hot... check out the picture in About Me on EBay!)

Now I have to figure out how the hell to wire them up. I almost bought a 2nd gen set, but decided not to, then the next week these came up.
Anyone have JDM-spec wiring diagrams???
She'll be pretty close to a real RS-RA, if they ever get done with the engine. Still need the skirts...
Check out this launch!

It's a Liberty RS

The real reason we didn't get most of those options is because Subarus are already kinda expensive (for what you get) over here. Adding cost for stuff that really is just fluff wasn't in Subarus best intrest.
Folding mirrors? Nobody had them in North America at that time.
Variable assist steering? Some cars had it, but a well weighted fixed setup is just fine. Read reviews of some cars that had it back then. The T-bird S/C comes to mind.
Ground effects? The Legacy was a mom-and-pop car in the early 90s. No need for such gaudy add-ons in thier eyes.
EJ20TT? Easy. No twin turbos till the new bodystyle.
EJ20G? Too high reving and no low end torgue for the target mom-and-pop audience. A normally aspirated ej22 feels better off the line, which is where 'us americans' like thier power.
No fog lights is an interesting choice. Not sure why the SSs didn't have them. I would guess there was no money to design a new bumber beam to accomodate them in the North American market.

1. I don't have an SS
2. I thought that all the first gen legacies were built in indiana

Turbo Legacies were (and still are?) built in Japan. So are STis, and possibly most other Imprezas.
Also, one other reason for no twin turbo is that they won't fit in a left hand drive car due to the steering and brake stuff.

I believe all Imprezas and Foresters are from the Yajima factory.

Wow, I see this thread a bit late.
I also never saw that switch

It's a pitty that those JDM cars have all those features and we don't.
Here in Europe we do have heated seats in the 2.2 version and from 1993 all 4wd's had heated mirrors as well. I wonder how they combined that in Japan, because the heating switch was on the same position as de folding switch...
It's also impossible to combine all the functions.
Headlight adjusting, cruise, fogs rear, fogs front, rear window defroster, headlight washers, sporty steering...
I count 7 functions, while I have 5 positions in my car. I saw cars with 6 positions for those buttons.
Damn, I would kill for a set of those folding mirrors and also for a MT cruise control kit!

heated mirrors could be wired into the rear defogger switch.

That's true, I know it's like that on most German cars.
But I just like all those OEM switches that tell me what they do exactly

the mirrors were either heated or folding. you couldn't get both. JDM got folding, euro-spec got heated, USDM got... ehm 2.2T :>

Damn... But, when you get a set of both, you can combine those two and fix it up with the defroster!
Or... Buy Legacy IV mirrors, that fold and are heated

Ben, you've got heated mirrors?
