what are some possible causes of and fixes for a sticking front caliper? the pads were seriously worn out, so the caliper in question did get extended quite far out.

I thought that if they were sticking there was no way to fix other than rebuilding or replacing? I could be wrong though.

Take them off, figure out if it's the piston or slide pins that are sticking.
Subaru rebuild kits are pretty cheap. basically you just take everything apart, re-grease the pins, and replace the dust boots and seals. If the piston is all wrecked up you might need a re-man caliper.
I have some L calipers I've been meaning to give away. RS or WRX parts are also pretty cheap.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to upgrade to WRX two or four pots

. And you already have the wheels to clear 'em.

its actually a '98 impreza Im trying to get ready to sell. I was hoping having the caliper pistons in all the way would stop them sticking but no. next step is take them apart, clean and bleed and see if it still happens I guess.

Most common cause I've seen is the outer seals around the pistons leaking and the pistons/bores getting corroded If thats the problem a new caliper in the fix.
