My Precious... Precious Ring....

I'm installing a set of Wiseco pistons and rings in my refreshed/cleaned/honed block *ej22t*

My ring compressor was not in the best shape and my number two pistons upper oil ring got caught *the ring on top of the expander* as I was using my piston hammer to genly send the piston home..

I stopped immediately when the piston stopped advancing and noticed that the end of my ring was sticking out a little.

I pulled piston up and out yelling f**k several times.. :P

It worries me somewhat since at rest, it was bent just slightly. Though, when compressed... it sat fine in the groove, but I was wondering if I should just pop it back out if ANY mis-shaped ring in ANY degree will scar and ruin my cyl-wall.... Or am I okay.

IF I DO need to order a set of rings, how/where do I get them. I got these with a kit and they're 20 thousanths over stock...

hehe, thanks...

I've a little update since posting this, over lunch I talked to Wiseco..

A single piston ring kit to replace my oops is going to be about $29.00 shipped, *about $10 cheaper than on the site.*

I was AMAZED at their great customer service... something I didn't expect...

The reason I hesitated on the phone call, was that I bought the piston/rebuild kit from a retailer, so I wasn't sure who to contact.

---------------

What Wiseco Told Me

"The oil ring needs to be able to move both up and down freely in the groove, when you've once it on the piston. IF there's binding, you're likely to have failure."

"Especially being the top one, and if it binds up & wears prematurely, the engine will not run properly."

---------------

So yeah, for $30 I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I'll be ordering a ring set next week.

although Ive never dealt with pistons/ rings my first thought is that it would be best to replace a $30 item that will buried deep in the engine and could possibly cause problems if in fact it was damaged. it being bent could cause it to go slightly out of round more readily than a non bent one at high rpm/pressure. once the engine is running well you wont think twice about the money. call it a $30 lesson. better safe than sorry with whats at stake. how are the piston ringlands looking?

I'm glad you reordered the rings. That could be catastrophic.

Let me know how you like those Wiseco's. I am planning on a rebuild myself here shortly.

My buddy who used to have a really nasty 70's Porsche with a flat six and said, "Boxers built properly... they're extremely durable."

I'm also going to pick up some new block bolt seals... THERE WEREN'T ANY in my "master rebuild kit." And I was one oil o-ring short, so I've got to split the block and replace the one that didn't quite fit as well as it should have...

There were some .pdf files on here that were for servicing the 2.2 N.A./Turbo with better details than the manufacturer's released six-volume manual set. That's where I found out about a few very important details.
