Gas Mileage

I was reading another post that had turned into a symposium on gas maleage so I thought I would just start a new one. Here are some of the things I've noticed with my car. I have a 92 SS 5 speed with about 195,000 miles on it, getting to be about time for another tune up and around 130psi on every cyl for a static compression test +/- 5psi. Mods are currently just de-snorked, axle back exhaust and a Turbosmart MBC set to around 10psi
I can usually get about 275 miles to a tank, but thats with a 40 mile round trip daily comute on the freeway. I also use good premium. The most I've ever put in my tank was 14.5ish gallons and I was at about 300 miles on that tank

I have 2 gas lights. This is probubly one of the odest things about my car, my friends 92 wagon L does the same thing and I think is has something to do with the fact that there are 2 seding units in the tank. The first light comes on when I have about 1/4 tank left on the gauge, or about 200 miles in the trip odo. It will usually turn off about 10-20 miles after it comes on then re-appear at about 260miles on the trip and about E on the gauge. Dosent really bother me kinda freaks my girl fiend out when shes driving though

I'm not usually to hard on my car, commuting is boring what can I say. I think the worst mileage I ever got was about 15mpg and I was pounding it that week ( I had just bought her and done a tune up to get her running good

) Anyway just something to think about i guess.

I've noticed something like this too. *sometimes* when the gauge is on the last 1/4, the light will come on for a few minutes. Then of course it'll come back on when the tank is close to actually being empty.

I'm new to the car but I've noticed the same thing with the fuel light coming on for a bit near the under the 1/4 and then going off. It comes back on just above or at the E. I wrote if off as an old car thing. The fuel gauge does read wrong on the bottom. On E I still have around three gallons left.

no light on mine.
I know my first leggy had one.
this one doesn't have a functional one that I can tell.
but @ 15 mpg I'll just keep watching the gauge drop.

figured I'd move my 2cents worth from the other thread.
OK, I got 309 out of this tank and I am chugging along, out of gas.
But last time I got gas I didn't fill it. It stopped at 13.8 gallons (from damn near a dry tank) @ $40. So had I filled ALL the way up I am positive I would have made it to at least 320. EJ22T. Bad compression on the front two cylinders (125-135 front, 155 on the rear).
6-8 psi of boost through an intercooler, 3" down pipe and an Apexi Power Intake filter that's literally 24k gold. ( Special D1 Immamura Edition

)
That puts me at 22.22mpg.
I also take it rather easy on the car. I don't go much over 2 or 3 psi in daily driving. I use AMSOIL 15-w40 full synth, Redline 90w Syth front diff fluid, 36 psi on all four tires (ok I lied, I run 40 on the drivers side to counteract my horrid alignment) And I have a bad wheel bearing.
Once I install my Whiteline Tie rods, ball joints and steering rack bushings and when Blackbart's hub and bearing finally get here (damn DHL) and I put it on, I'll go get an alignment. I wonder what kind mpg I'll see once I'm not dragging a dead wheel bearing and I don't have to crank the wheel to the right to keep it in a straight line...
I also let my car fully warm up before I drive it.

i was thinking maybe cause i never have over half a tank in the car it might be heating up my pump, im currently out of the job so i cant afford to fill it up all the time, i need to check the compression, ive never looked at it before

First, searching this site yields fantastic bits of information. I have gone months with out posting because I have found all the answers and more using the search function. Not trying to be rude, just letting you know that it works wonders!
Second, Some more info on the car would help.

If you have a first gen legacy, it should have a light, (as long as the bulb is working).
You can test it using the following info

checking in with mileage problems too. 14mpg-ish on a normal day. car Seems to run alright (backfires in the manifold under heavy load sometimes so I figure its running really really rich.) Cel goes on and off randomly, I think its my coolant temp sensor thats giving me such bad mileage though. Does that sound right to you guys? I put 150+ miles in a day on my car atleast 4x a week so any improvement would pay for itself real fast

DAM!! pull the code already. with you driving even a 1 mpg improvement is something $$.
I'm getting 15ish buy I drive 10 miles a day on the high side.

omg... i'm only getting 240km for a tank of gas (not really a full tank, the the needle sits at the last indicator of the gauge) and I fill it up at least 91 to 92. could there be something wrong? i do hear a clicking sound from engine bay at around 2900rpm could it be that my car is only running on 3 cyl instead of 4?

uh, yeah. running a cylinder down will hamper performance and economy of course.
running my EJ22T as N/A, I've got crap for power and crap for mileage. I get about 16-18MPG in the city, 20-24 on the freeway depending on my speed and if it's 100% freeway or a little city in between.
a typical tank is 10 gallons (I fill up once I hit a quarter tank, let it run low and the pump sucks all kinds of crap up that settles in the bottom of the tank); and gets me 220 miles tops. if I drag it out (13 gallons) I can get about 260 sometimes more; but I never drive it that far into the low-tank state.

i gotta take it to a shop soon then... this doesn't look good. besdies that i get a very very low idle speed, less than 500 rpm. and it even stalls in a few occasion when i try to park in reverse. its an auto...

Scuzzy, that bad? Running the same thing, the worst I got was 23 mpg (down from a little over 25) over the course of a tank. I also didn't lose any torque as it still came off the line well (would beat my Mazda3 2.3 for probably the first 2k), but it started to run out of breath ~1000 rpm sooner than the N/A engine. Mine was freshly rebuilt and a low mileage unit to begin with so that may be a factor.

usually average around 22-23 around town, and 28-29 on the freeway.
