So i just purchased my first subaru and turbo car. ITs a 1994 subaru legacy turbo sedan, auto tranny. I've looked through several of the threads and it seems that a WRX downpipe will bolt right up, is this correct? So could i run a 3in. from the downpipe back and should i buy a kit or have the muffler shop do it themselves. Keep the cat. converters?, what type of mufflers. Im sorry to sound so repetitive with all this stuff, but i hate to buy the wrong parts or things i don't need. Any help is appreciated. Also constructive criticism on how to properly post on here is welcomed as well, haha.

Hi, and welcome to the group.

First off, familiarize yourself with the search feature of the site, there's two: the google tab at top right, and a better one in the text tabs top middle.
I'm sure most of your questions have been well answered before.

The short answer is, yes, a WRX or STI downpipe will bolt up to the turbo... but the mount tabs on the rest of the pipe probably won't line up with the Legacy. Take it to a muffler shop to have new hangars welded on. The rest of the system may have to be fabbed, or at least extended, since the Leg. is a bit longer in the tail. No big deal to an experienced shop.
I would keep the cat, but use a Hi-flow, performance cat (3" are readlily available, about $100) keeps the Feds off your back, and better for the environment... also damps the raspy edge of the exhaust, gives you a mellow, deep exhaust note.
Mufflers are pretty much a personal choice, as they all function the same, just look different. I'm running a Brullen twin-tip, looks similar to stock, but w/ rolled, angle cut chrome tips... a lot of guys run the fart cannons, it's down to your taste. (Or lack thereof! )

3in is good if your plannin on building it... But can be a bit loud on these... Thankfullly, unless you put equal length headers.... it wont sound like a honda

Awesome, i just purchased a bellmouth downpipe, 4inch at the turbo flange and 3 inch at the back. I am now thinking about using a glasspack muffler in the middle of the exhaust as a resonator and then a ebay fart can at the back. Anybody see a problem with this setup, also will my ground clearance be severely affected with this?

haha, your saying that like its a bad thing. j/k. I dont think the system will be too ricer. From what i've read a glasspack muffler halfway thru works as a quality resonator and tones the whole thing done and gets rid of that raspy tone. Im a poor college student, so these uber-expensive exhaust systems are not an option.

it won't sound like crap at all. they're just poking fun at the fart can idea. but regardless of that, it'll sound awesome. no worries.

No, it will be fine...


Exhaust diameter on turbo motors does not really affect low-end power...because the turbo already places a significant restriction on the engine, so anything after the turbo can be as open as desired.

SO i've been reading alot of posts about boost creep. It seems that whenever you modify the exhaust in any way, you will experience some sort of boost creep. Will installing this 3 inch turbo back system cause the boost to creep into un-safe levels and hit fuel cut? I dont have a boost gauge or boost controller.

Where have you read that? Maybe you're thinking of new age STi models? Many of us here have modified exhausts without boost creep; the only exception I can think of is magicmike (I think), who had boost creep with a VF39 (the turbo the STi comes with from the factory).

You'll be fine with an upgraded exhaust on an otherwise stock BC turbo.

I get a small amount of boost spike, but no creep...

The spike is generally attributed to the bellmouth downpipe...so your best bet would be to eventually get a divorced tube downpipe.

what do you think keep in mind that i want to boost my car around 16 psi with the correct mod.
just looking around is 4 1/2 work out ?
