ok, im sifting through information, and finding a lot of conflicting evidence, so id like to get this straight, and confirmed.
i need a replacement tranny for my 91 ss, there are NONE in my province. ive found a couple starting at $985. ive found one without the front diff/bell housing for $500. both of these options would have to be shipped.
I am sticking with the 4eat.
so from what i gather i can use the 91-94 Legacy SS transmissions.
-but can i use the same tcu?
or 92-94 AT AWD Legacys (cuz they have a 3.9fd? but no extra clutch packs)
legacy touring wagon tranny?
svx tranny
-i need to swap to 3.9 front diff?
pre 6/96 impreza awd 4eat
-as long as pinouts are the same, and front diff changed to 3.9?
or rebuild the tranny?
or somehow replace the front pump which is dead in my existing tranny?
i have 1k to spend and fix this car.
p.s. i know im a noob, i apologize in advance for making another thread, but i need to know, and im having a tough time getting concrete info.

Yes, you should be able to run the SS TCU for whatever you choose to run
juice91si wrote:or 92-94 AT AWD Legacys (cuz they have a 3.9fd? but no extra clutch packs)
Yes
juice91si wrote:legacy touring wagon tranny?
Yes
juice91si wrote:svx tranny

I've never swapped the front diff out, but it's an option I guess. The SVX tranny still has issues
juice91si wrote:pre 6/96 impreza awd 4eat

I think the 1.8 impreza has a 3.90 final drive ratio.

Personally, I'd try to have it rebuilt, unless you know the trans you're getting is good, because you may have problems with it later down the line.

thank you. im tired of headaches, the estimates for rebuilds i got were a lot more than replacing the tranny.
i went for option 1 and found another turbo tranny.
this means i will have a minty condition 3.9 front diff and pinion, as well as the old 4eat tranny. either i sell it off and make some money back, or keep it for parts. how much do 3.9 front diff/pinions go for usually? (on forums, not salvage yards)

Glad you found an option that works for you...
You don't generally see front diffs and the associated stuff for sale this forum...because they are such a pita to replace.

i sent you a pm. unfortunately, because you in alaska, which technically is the united states, id have to get a broker and what not, and with the extra fees and duty, going over my budget doesnt seem like a viable option for me right now.

It's amazing how things go around. All the new cars are coming with aux inputs now for ipods and the like. Back in the day, it was probably done for portable cd players.....better quality then using the tape adapter.
