Build thread: twin super, twin turbo

The build is currently being discussed as........
EJ22T bored to .20 over and stroked with 2.5 crank and matching pistons and rods.
1000 cc or so injectors
Stand alone EM
Dual Eaton M62 superchargers from the Kompressor Series Mercedes (electric clutch)
Dual VF39ish turbochargers
Split/Dual FMIC (One large intercooler, but basically two intercoolers, just welded together)
MAP based
SCs will be mounted on top of the engine in the center. Throttle bodies located over the heads. Turbos in the front, one where the battery is, one opposite.
This (minus the turbos) has been my plan for a long time. I just never had the money. Andy does. Smile
So its gonna happen.
Will it work. Yes.
How well? Well...... it should work fine.
How much power? Andy wants to shoot for 600 whp. But I don't know what tranny he wants to use yet. So we may be tranny limited.
But....... Even if we don't make MONSTER power, this thing will be a flipping torque monster down low. We are talking 20 psi @ 2000 rpm......with the correct pulley ratio. In fact, I believe he should just do the superchargers to start with and make it all work.
But we shall see where this leads.
day 1:
Doug and i started to take apart a motor that we were gonna use the heads off of. looks like were going with different heads now..
oh well looks like those are trashed. but we have many more sets of heads that we can use.
tomorrow port and polishing on the new heads

Why go to all that trouble to shoving all that in there... twin turbo? Maybe. Supercharger? Maybe. 2 Superchargers? Pointless. I like the idea of doing something out of the ordinary but you're working with 2.2 Liters here.
What exactly is your goal? It would be awesome to see some fabrication put to work but you might as well start down the realistic path from the beginning.

Its gonna be a show car. Everything chromed, polished and painted.

What about going rwd? Would open up plenty of transmission options. I suppose at that you could put two blocks together to make an H8 and use a Porsche transaxle in the rear.

It will happen. We have the heads, rods, multiple blocks, cranks, so on and so forth. We just got the first supercharger off ebay. We have plasma cutters, mig welders, ying and yang!

Not my type of build, but very interested to see how it turns out. Good Luck!
Whats the new displacement going to be? ~2.7 L w/ the 2.5 crank and the block being bored.
Maybe a H6 is in the future for more torque.

At this point its probably going to be a 2.2 closed deck bored and stroked to 2.4. But if we cant find a 2.2, then a 2.5 will be going in. not sure about what 2.5 though. But I bet it will have to be and ej257

Woah. I can't wait to see this thing. With the collective knowledge and workmanship being brought together I have no doubts there'll be a lot of trial and error but the final result is going to be sick

so what TIG are you getting
as you guys may or may not already know, you can oxy/acyetylene weld most grades of aluminum if you have the right flux and rods, and you can MIG aluminum without a spool gun if you have a short(~4') lead held straight out from the machine, 100% argon in the bottle and the correct wire & liner.
ultra super good prepwith consumables
only used for Al is a must, as always.
welding plate and tube to cast can be an issue. I've never welded with subaru's cast aluminum stuff but it looks to be decent as cast Al goes. good luck.
now please dont take this as hating but wouldnt a single M62 accomplish what you want, ie insta spool, and get top end from the turbo? carry on, should be awesome.

Personally,I think twin superchargers are enough, but its Andys build.... And I think it will be awesom still. 20 plus psi at 2000 rpm? yeah, that will be awesome, then 40 psi @ 3000 rpm? While the motor may blow up, it still did it! Nah, the motor wont blow.......cross fingers....

Hate to do it, but 4 compressors on a 4cyl does sound silly (though I saw a EVO set-up with 4 tiny cookie sized turbos placed right off the exhaust ports that was cool looking).
That said - I'm sure you guys will get everything on/in there & have it running.
TIG for NICE aluminum welds!

yeah. 4 different compressors for a 4 cyl does seem like a little much. but hell. it's something that's never been done before. i personally think it'll be awesome. it'll be overkill, and that's what's so awesome.
hahaha.
and the fact that it will be something new and unseen on one of our cars. although Legasee had a good idea. why not try that on an H6 motor? that would be extra cool lol.

I cannot wait to HEAR this engine at full throttle! Gonna be sweet!

What does that have to do with anything? One advantage is that it will yield low bsfc off throttle, as compared to some rediculous thing like a smallblock.

I was thinking H6 too - SVX motor twin turbo'd has been done but is always interesting & gives you more CYLs to cram boost into.

The svx was built to hold boost, and uses pistons very similar to the 2.2t.

You guys might want to think about mapping out the compressor(s) surge areas. These motors can't ingest enough air like that. Ordinarilly I'll use a compressor map to determine how quickly I want it to spool. Most of the time it is not necessary as the majority of aftermarket turbos I see on EJ motors are just to large to have this problem.
