2.5rs hood scoop install. How to

so i recently installed a 2.5 rs hood scoop on my car and yeah here' a nice little write up. feel free to pm me if you have any q's

so...
b/c i'm a pioneer this took me awhile.

*you are not me so you'll get it done quickly! :-D

first thing i did was get a nice little scooper..

Image

!*then you hack off all the screws b/c as i later found out, the risers (thats what i'm going to call them) make it so the scoop is about a 1/4 inch above the actual hood. :D i know

just take a saw and cut it down so its uniform on both sides and even all around.

then you do a nice little tape job!
i started by removing the original scoop, good luck
then i taped all around the opening where the scoop was to go.

i positioned the scoop exactly where i wanted it then i took a huge strip of masking tape and put it across the width of the hood, so it was right in front of the scoop.

Image

this piece will help you center it properly and you can write on it and such.
Image
then i put another pi3ce of tape behind the scoop, so i could trace out where it was going to be.
Image

Image
so as you can see here i just traced it out.

then if you have a TMIC you can hack away the hood so you get better airflow, i haven't done this yet but i plan to as soon as i figure out where to start

i'll add more pictures later but you then get 3m "kick ass" body/moulding attachment tape and some nail polish remover, AND a hairdryer blessed with the power to create good heat. :D

aaand you
1. remove all the tape from your hood
2. get a soft cloth that wont scratch you paint but has enough abrasiveness to remove dirt/etc well. i used the back of a blue sponge

clean the necessary area with the nail polish remover and dawn soap (mild).

*then take the 3M tape and just put it on around the area you're applying it to.

*heat the tape with the blowdryer and press hard on it to smooth it out and make it stick to the hood better.
*The longer you spend on this the better it will turn out. (don't spend all night... :) )

*take off the red part of the tape while heating it still, all over.

!* i put some aerodynamic looking door insulation in the front of where the rear tape will go to prevent air from slowly eating it away over time, i thought it was a good idea.!*

position your scoop and put it on!

*now heat the tape some more and press down hard on the scoop and the tape all over, so it will stick well.

*Again, the longer you spend doing this the better it will end up

*Do this to all areas you taped and then let it sit for like 30-1hr just to make sure everything is golden :-D

PM me if you have any questions about anything!

Thanks.
Are you planning on re-using the studs to secure it more better? I wouldn't trust that tape, no matter how good its supposed to be, on my scoop at more than 45mph.

So since you didn't cut the hood at all, does that mean that it sits up on top of the hood?

Or did you find a way to smooth it into the hood?

well it's REALLY cold in the MT right now, and my car is currently covered in 8inches of fresh pow.
i have driven it on the highway multiple times, and taken it up to 80 with no problems.

the only things that would possibly make the tape go bad is prolonged exposure to the wind, or rain or an asteroid.

So far (3 weeks) i have had 2 of the 3 vigorously attack the scoop with no problems.

This tape is litterally (go ahead and correct me) part adhesive and part cement. it truly looks like it and sticks like crazy when you apply it.

when i put the door insulation in front of the tape at the back end of the scoop, that prevented wind and anything else from hitting the tape.
on the front of the scoop where the opening is, it will sit flush so you don't have to put anything in front of the tape.

so there really isn't even exposure.

i don't know if it helps but the engine probably heats up the tape over time and makes it stick better also.

I trust it :D

Doesn't sit on top of the hood at all b/c i cut the screws off and filed off the plastic mounting area of the hood so it was even all over.

wow, it was WAY uneven before i did that, if you don't remove the screws and the plastic mounting stuff it sits about 1/4''+ above the whole hood.

That xtra clearance wasn't what i was really looking for

IDK That looks to me like it sits on the hood, not in it.

...... it did.

i found a better way to do it though.

***update***

instead of using the 3M tape you can cut away a rectangular line about an inch high and like 11 or so inches across (From the hood) so the whole plastic mounting points and screws will fit in perfect.
then it won't sit on top at all, just IN :D

this way you can use the screws and not cut anything off...

eh? eh?

Just for clarification, you are saying to cut the hoodscoop fairing and not the hood?

And just one edge of the scoop, not a complete perhiphery trim?

Looks good and nice write up.

oh uh you can do it either way.

i was impatient so i cut off the ?fairing? <---the thing the screws are attached to.

so here's a really REALLY bad example of what else you could do, and what i may do when i get cash back from bernanke...

Image

so in this image, just pretend it's a real hood like ours and cut away the black part of the hood, this will let you put the "fairing" part of the hood into the holes and you'll be able to screw it together from the underside and it will stay more securely.

this should work alot better than the 3M tape style i described above.

:-D anything else let me know! glad to help!

so yeah the way i did it on mine right now, there's no screws or anything. it's just 3M taped on plus zipties.

this way^^^ should work better though.

you would cut away the hood where the screw mounting thing area touches the hood, so it will sink into the hood.

:D so yeah

Looking to do just this very thing (using an old N/A hood so not to ruin a good turbo hood).

Have you installed your Intercooler yet and if so how was clearance/interferance of the hole in the hood with the Intercooler? Im Kinda Paranoid about cutting wrong and being unable to seal the hood to the intercooler.

yeah i installed my 06/07 wrx TMIC intercooler and it works really well, the clearance is perfect and you really don't need to mess with anything.

i cut (am going to ) out the mounting tabs for the turbo hood to give me some more air flow, but other than that it works perfect.

there's a bunch of ways to do this and it looks WAY better than stock in my opinion

if you want to seal the hood and tmic, you could get some foam and put it around the hole on the underside of the hood so it will line up with the TMIC, i haven't done that yet b/c ive been really busy with school and riding but i will eventually.

thanks guys, im pretty proud of it :-D
