Custom power steering lines?

Hey everyone -

In trying to mate my STI steering rack to my 94 steering pump it's impossible to get the fittings to match. I was wondering what the chances would be of using fuel injection line to make some custom power steering lines.

I know fuel injection line is rated to like 120 psi, but I don't know what kind of pressure is involved in a power steering system.

Any input?

Good God, no! Power steering line pressure is over a thousand psi. And how would you attach the fittings to the hose anyhow?

I suggest you take what you have to a store that makes custom hydraulic lines. Trucks and tractors need this kind of stuff all the time.

Damnit, I thought that might be the answer. I don't even think I have the correct fittings that go to the rack itself, so a custom line won't really help me that much.

I got the rack with a crossmember on ebay and he sent the hoses with it but I don't think they fit. I'll mess around with it a little bit more.

Thanks!

You could just get an WRX or STi power steering pump...that would probably solve the problem

Nick's suggestion is a good one, I think. Newer pumps have remote reservoirs, though, so you might have to do some creative plumbing.

Or just bring the rack and your pump to the shop, along with length measurements. They can figure out what kind of fittings are needed.

Yeah. There is a shop near me that does custom lines all the time. Luckily I haven't needed their services, but they can do brake lines and whatnot easily.
