Cold brakes=no brakes?

Okay....the '93 sits outside at night. When it gets cold here..in the teens if not lower...and I get in the car in the morning, I have to depress the brake pedal pretty hard and the brakes do not grab. This lasts for about a minute or two after the engine is started. Any ideas or is this just normal for a car being in the cold? Thanks again.

Is it possible that the brakes are actually grabbing just fine, but you're not getting any power assist?

Because I think most likely the check valve in your brake booster hose is freezing up. There may be a little bit of water in it. Remove the brake booster hose and clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner or carb cleaner, and after it dries try hitting the valve from each end with a little WD-40.

If that doesn't do it, replace the check valve.

I think you are correct. They are grabbing fine but no assist...I guess I couldn't describe it. Reminds me of driving a car with no power brakes...years ago.

I'll check that out once it gets warm enough for me to do that. Thanks!!!
