Fuel Gauge Went AWOL...

I was driving last night and I watched my fuel level gauge rise from about 1/4 tank up to full. It pegged itself up there and then the instrument panel light that illuminates it simply shut off.

So now it says I have a full tank of gas and the light behind it blew out or something.

Did the gauge just 'die' or what?

Hmm....that's pretty weird.

You can do some testing to see if it's the gauge or sender units. Unplugging the connector under the rear seat should make the gauge go to empty. Also, you can test to see if the low fuel light comes on.

Ok Josh. I tried some of those tests.

When I unplugged the harness, the gauge stayed pegged at full.
I also grounded the #4 pin on it and that did trip the low fuel light.

I'm thinking the gauge screwed itself, because the sending unit seems to be working fine...

Yeah it sounds that way.

Hmmm would it be easier to buy a whole new instrument cluster or just the fuel gauge itself?

You can't purchase just a new fuel gauge. You're best off trying to get a used cluster, and swapping over the gauge, or at least taking the old cluster out and doing some testing.

I'll check my old one that is dis-mantled at home if you want.

Go for it lol.
I'd buy the entire cluster from you, too. That's if it's for sale, of course.

Well. the speedo is fucked... but that and the tach is separate from the black surround thing that hold the temp gauge and the gas gauge...

Lemme look when I get home.

Yeah, the temp and gas are on their own piece of plastic. So I suppose that's all I would need.

And I do have that... and I did mess it up...
