I took some time to straighten out the garage a bit. Snapped a few pics because it seems to have come up quite a bit lately. Maybe these can be used to replace the ones that have gone missing from the old thread.
Please forgive the gaudy color-coding. I was trying to make it as easy to understand as possible. I've got a few more angles if anybody would like to see those too.
These are Legacy/Liberty Ej20g heads. Not Impreza/WRX ones.

I see a grid cast on the block, was it closed deck?

Yes it is. I believe that all the Legacy Ej20Gs were closed deck. If not all, then most. I'm sure somebody, such as MattM can say for certain.

Those 25 heads are hla correct? Notice the difference in hatching on the heads, the 2.5 has opposing hatch marks, whereas the 20g has parallel marks.

The Ej25 head in the pic is shim over bucket. No hydraulic adjusters that I can see. The cam operates directly on the bucket. Which, in turn, operates the valve.
The Ej20g head is HLA or stub rocker. The cam operates a rocker arm that 'floats' between the valve, the HLA 'pill' and the cam itself.
You can see the shims in this picture if you squint. The valve train is removed on the Ej20g.

GOTCHA. I was told to stay away from HLA's like bad acid.

There are HLA EJ25 heads, they come from the '96. The cams still ride right over the buckets (no followers like the 20G), but the buckets have a HLA built into them. You can spot them from the outside by the valve covers.
EJ20G
'97+ EJ25 DOHC
'96 HLA EJ25 DOHC
Another note, the '96 HLA heads have the larger combustion chambers (56cc) like the 20G heads.

Wiseco has Head cc's listed as 46.6 cc's for both DOHC ej25 (Imprezas, Legacys, Foresters) & Legacy Turbo (SSs) ej22ts.
http://www.wiseco.com/Catalogs/Automobile.aspx
Is that correct?
If it is the 2.5 DOHC heads should have stock ej22t compression when used on a ej22t shortblock.
