D470 vs. D563 for a Legacy SS

I was over at Frozen Rotors (They are local to me) picking up a set for the wife's car and ordering some for me. I was looking at getting either some Hawk HP+ or Ferodo 2500's for my car but... the D563 plate has VERY few options. (Like none through Hawk, Ferodo, or Carbotech)

We were going through 4 or 5 books trying to cross-reference parts and such and we looked at the measurements for the D470 and D563. They are VERY close. So close, in fact, that I'm going to be doing a little hands-on research. I ordered a cheap $15 pad in the D470 size to test fit onto the Legacy and see what I come up with.

Yes, the measurements on backing plate for the D470 are about .7mm less in width than the D563 but I'm going to see how that works out in a real-world test fit.

Has anyone else done this? I searched under keyword D470 but that just came up with the fact that those are used on the 97-01s.

I'll post pics with my results.

D470 looks close enough to you? They look quite different to me. I can't imagine the shims lining up.

But if you prove me wrong, I'd love to know!

Another thing you can do if you want more pad options is to swap to the calipers from a pre-2002 Impreza 2.5RS; then you can use any pads meant for the WRX. Actually, I think pre-2000 Legacy 2.5GTs use those calipers too.

Pre-02 Legacy and RS had the same calipers as the WRX, but the brackets were different. I don't think the pads are the same from those models as for the larger WRX-sized ones. Would be good if they were.

Hmm. Those pictures are far more accurate than what we were working with in the office. It's a $15 test so I'm not too concerned about cost.

Will the pre-02 RS calipers fit under 94 T-Leg 15" wheels? I understand that I could grind down WRX brakes to fit under my 92 six-spoke wheels but my 'summer' wheels are the 94s.

Not sure about whether or not the RS/LGT brakes will fit under 15" wheels, but the chances are pretty good. I think the rotors are the same, or very similar in size, to the Turbo fronts. 10.7/10.9 vs 11.4" for the 02 WRX/OB/LGT parts.

The RS/GT front brakes are essentially the same as stock 1st-gen Legacy Turbo front brakes except the caliper is the 02 WRX caliper and therefore the bracket is different because it fits that caliper. They'll fit under 15" wheels, and the pads are the same as the 02 WRX pads. D721, if I remember correctly.

Time to go brake shopping, then.

I'm not looking to get bigger wheels for brakes and... it's a 14 year old car. No need to drop $$$ into the braking system. I'll still try the D470 just for posterity but most likely I'll try finding some RS/GT Calipers and brackets.

Thanks.

edit: I found some RS Brakes for a great price so the point is moot.

Thanks for all the info. My pad options just got a whole lot larger.
