Ok. so my problem is my car is running really really bad. I have a inop speedo, a cyl 1 misfire, horrible gas milage (2-8mpg), its ticking pretty loudly (could be a knock), and it had 164k before the speedo went out (mind you it went out before I bought the car).

So when I bought the car, the previous owner bought it straight off the lot. Then it broke down, he thought it was too expensive to fix so he left it in a parking lot for 3 years. I bought the car for a total of $200 and it didn't start. Replaced fuel pump and strainer and it ran.

Too bad I didn't have my license yet so I had to wait a month till I could take the test. Passed driving test. Drove it for a little over a month... then washed engine compartment, wouldnt start.... So I replaced the coilpack, plugs, and wires, it runs again but now it has a mis in cyl 1, and it wouldnt even stay running. So I tightened the throttle cable, just enough to make it idle around 500.

I bought the car in october started driving it in november and killed it on christmas... then it got fixed around january 12. I've only had the car for a good 4-5 months and it's my first car so I really want to keep the car and need all the help I can get.

thank you for any help you may provide.

when u washed the engine bay is there any chance that u got water in your intake?? that happen to my brothers car but it dryed up after a while...the ticking...the only time that mine ever did that was when is was low on oil my ...my first car was a 1990 2.2 na and i still have it and run it everyday

Yeah. I have put more oil in it alot too... It has no leaks though. and its my daily driver due to being 17 I dont have very many choices. and i do need a new intake filter but it didnt get wet. I left the airbox tight, checked it afterward, but it was dry.

So it sat for a few years? if thats the case the lifters probably drained themselves and you will have to bleed them. With my friends impreza(same motor) we changed the oil with like 20wt oil til the lifters bled (about 20 minutes of idle-2000rpm)

I would go through with the basics first.. new plugs, fuel and air filter, pcv valve. make sure you dont have any vaccum leaks.

Where do you bleed the lifters at? I have honestly never heard of that...

Yeah I have new plugs and they are gapped correctly, new wires, and a new coil pack. I haven't had the money yet to change the fuel or air filter, but how do I check the PCV valve?

there are really only two ways to "bleed" lifters.

First beeing take the heads apart, and squeeze the lifters while they are submerged in oil....

Option 2 is just run the car. A lighter oil will get into the lifters easier, like my friend and I did to his impreza using 20wt, then changing it again to 5w30 or whatever you run. Running it just takes time for them to bleedall the air out. ON my 22t when I originally rebuilt it with new cams, it took a good 30 minute drive for them to stop ticking.

On mine I put in the regular 10w30 oil with 1 quart of some oil cleaner. It worked great and the ticking went away after a little drive.
