hello all, first post here. well subes have been in my family since around 94 starting with an 90 loyale. then onto a 86 dl (my first car), 98 outback, 96 brighton, then i found a 98 legacy gt for my gf last year. well as being armed with knowledge i happened to stumble upon a rare peice of subaru history in the back yard of the garage i took her car to get inspected...92 legacy sedan. nothing special from a distance...true untill i saw the mileage. 334344 miles, original engine, original tranny only 2 owners! he gave me the key said i could move it to the front so i started it up and it ran PERFECT! not a tick, hesitation, stumble, nothing. i couldnt pass the opportunity up on owning a pecie of this history so now a day later i am now the owner of this vehicle for 350 bux cash thanks for reading guys, im looking forward to being a member of this forum and getting into a little more techincal information. i hope you enjoyed my story and my intro and pics will soon follow!

Ya, these old Legacies are known for their longevity. Your is only a bit over mid-life, lol. When I pulled my motor out with 200k on it for a hot rodded one, the thing was mint.

thanks, it was a great find, i enjoy driving it every day. i still cant belive how well it performs after all the miles on it and what i paid for it. it needs repairs, like all cars do..esp ones that have been neglected a bit (..a bit, yes, not completely tho). yes vermont is subaru capitol for parts. its amazing how many subarus you can browse for sale on craigslist in the vermont section. im hoping to have it completely ready (replaced suspension, new tires, brakes, tie rod, alignment, etc...) for next winter, its an excellent dd/2nd car. i really have no bad things to say about it, and havent had any regrets on the purchase, or putting money into parts. i remember how nice my moms 90 legacy sedan was when she got it back in 99 (120k miles, super super clean), it still has that feeling, they are well built cars inside and out. best cars are definatly from the early to mid 90's. i promise pics someday soon!!! thanks for letting me share, and i really love this site.

It's good to have people here that knew Subarus existed before they came out with the WRX and STI. Tell some rice head that Scoobies had the spare tire mounted above the engine once upon a time. The look on their face is usually priceless.

congrats! i dont know how people keep getting these for so freakin cheap! if your car runs that good, i wouldnt doubt it if you could get 400k out of it, not sure if one has ever gone that far.


my car has around 320k, dont know exactly because the cluster panel was replaced. last time i had the heads off, around 260k, the motor looked almost new inside. it has a slight lifter tick but other than that it is great. im pretty sure the transmission will bite the dust long before the motor.

ok back again. my 240 project put me on hold of the DD, im sure a few of you understand that situation. i still owe you guys some pics, but i just wanted to share that i finally tested out the A/C, and it blows ice cold!! this car really amazes me and its been worth any repair money to date. pics will come, sorry im lazy:P

well having the car parked for some time due to fun with the summer ride, i was finally getting it ready for the winter months coming ahead. changed the oil, finally...and put in a new battery. ran great, till i found it was blowing gas out the lines in the rear. im gonna try to splice as far close to the sending unit i can without dropping the tank, but for those who dropped the tank is it that difficult of a job? it only looks like 6 bolts for the straps and removing the filler neck. rusty tho..

The driveline & rear diff have to be dropped. I'm pretty sure you'll have to drop the rear crossmember. Not necessarily because it's in the way, but because the bolts for the straps are tucked away.

I may be wrong...it's been a while since I've done that work.

also there are holes in the xmember where you can get to the strap bolts. it does look like the exhaust may need to drop as well. i cant get to this for a few days just trying to get all the info i can in case there are leaks above the tank. i hope not in the worst way...

damn, i tried to splice in new lines but the leak is coming from above the tank. dropping tank in a few hours i hope this goes ok. mother@#$%#$.

okkk wonderful rainy sunday, great environment to be rolling around in the dirt driveway covered in gas, rust and debris. this is a bitch. im halfway there but i will finish this today. you have to remove the straps, 6 bolts 10mm , you need an extension to get through the crossmember to 3 of the bolts for the straps. you have to drop the exhaust system (im cutting the pipe and putting on a new one, will also be repairing a leak in that process. there are 2 hoses that attach to the tank from the filler neck, the clamp is barely accesible with a vise grip but its do able, and the other hose is easy to get to. if you have a lift, this job may be easier to do by dropping the crossmember as stated earlier, but you can do it w/o. i figured i would share some of this experience in case any one else needs to go through this shit. lol. est time, 3-5 hours.

gas lines were real easy. tank wouldnt move and i somehow overlooked the obvious and i found the panel by removing the back seat. no big deal i wanted to fix an exhaust leak anyway so far ive replaced:

valve cover gaskets and grommets
new battery
new brake pads all around
new front rotor
studded tires in the front (getting ready for winter)
gas lines
rear wheel bearing/hub assembly
2 wheel studs
inner tie rod
front and rear strut mounts on driver side
and prob a few more repairs i forgot.

total price including car = 850 bux.

all thats left is an alignment and gotta put those tires on and im all set for winter. prob the first winter ive ever looked forward to. ive driven a 240 the last 5 winters and it was never fun when i "had" to drive. its a good feeling to know all the parts thats been replaced. this whole ownership has been great, and i dont regret this purchase. altho ive literally "went through" this vehicle, next time around its gonna be brand new for me haha.


edit: just replaced the top mount and wheel studs on the front. mount and studs were from a 97 awd wagon, so just to give a heads up the top mounts and studs in the front interchange from 89 to 98 i belive, maybe even newer. as far as the rear mount , i'll find out tomorrow.

well something came up and i might be parting ways with this car. ive replaced so many things compared to other cars ive owned, this literally rides like brand new. unfortunatly, temptation has caught my eye and another 240sx might be sharing my driveway. ive had a chance to take her through the first snow storm and it rides excellent, and if myself or anyone gets the privalge of running this car, they will not be dissapointed in anyway. i just thought i should end this thread in the proper form. if this should be the last update, i thank everyone on here for the help and the parts that i have purchased and i hope to find a reason to come here again, if for some reason i decide to keep it, im glad to have a place to come to. thanks.
