Im thinking about buying a 92' Legacy Sedan Turbo and I want some opinions from the legacy gurus. The car has:

Mileage around 200,000+
5 speed
Really clean
Well documented and serviced (although I havent seen them yet)
Asking price: $3900 obo

I havent even looked at the car yet, but when I do, I will; compression test it, check the paper work, look at the car up and down, and of course drive it. Now I know the guy is asking alot, but how much should I offer the dude? I was thinking $3000 or less cause of the high mileage. Thanks

Although our cars (and Subies in general) are known for running for hundreds of thousands of miles, 200K miles on it is a lot. Because of that $3,000 is way too much in my opinion.

I'd try $2750 and see where the seller goes from there. I know it's lowballing but whatever.

Many of us have motors with over 200K on them and they still run great.

Yeah, I know $3000 is still way too much for a car with 200,000+ miles, but you know how people are; They think their legacy's are worth more then gold. I was actually going to ask if he would take $2800 for it but, who knows. Ill keep you guys updated though, Thanks

Since when is negotiating the price on a car "low balling"? Get real!

Check it out, drive it, tell him you're looking for one like this, tell him your budget (for example: $2000 to $2500 dependng on condition) and leave him your contact info and then walk away.

Tell him if he as the car in a few weeks and would like to talk price in your range then great.

It all would be contingent on getting a mechanic to put on a lift and check out - worth paying $50 for even if you don't end up buying the car...

+1 yeah,

you want to express interest, but at the same time make it seem like you don't want it.

point out as many problems as you can with the car too, that can be hard but it will help you ALOT with negotiating.

Yeah I know what you mean; I was going to do that when I go look at the car lol. I've owned and driven alot of cars now and I pretty much know what to look for (good and bad), but I was just curious how much one of these legacys go for now days. Im getting the hint $2000-2800 with the mileage of the car.

My legacy has 170k on the ticker and i paid $1500. Ive seen a couple on the local craigslist with between 150k to 200k and they were asking $1800 to $2200.

These are all california cars with absolutly 0 rust. So, $3900 for any legacy turbo, in my mind, is way over priced. Even offering $2800 is too much if you ask me.

Yeah the problem is, People think these cars are worth more then gold. Dont get me wrong I think these cars are bad ass, but no one wants to part with them for cheap. Its like trying to find a 84-87 Toyota Corolla GTS (AE86) with low miles for cheap; its not going to happen. These cars are getting more rare day to day. Plus theres a huge cult following for each one of these cars too.

Now if there is someone here wanting to sell one for cheap; thats in the Oregon/Washington area, then tell me about it, cause I cant find one.

I just bought one in the same, documented condition as you, with 152k 5speed, for 700 bucks. ABSOLUTLY no rust. none, anywhere, and the fenders had regularly been cleaned on the underside. to prevent rust. 700 bucks.
2700 is way too much.

The price of used cars very alot by location, Last year i bought my 91 SS 4EAT for 170,000km(106250Miles)

for $4200

so if you think the cars worth it, i'd so go for it.

I picked up a 94 ss in fair condition for 800. The motor only has 80 grand on the clock runs like a champ. I bought it from a shady used car dealer who didnt even know it was a turbo or awd, cuz the badges fell off. To be honest I wouldnt even sell my car for 3000 cuz Its such a nice car for the buck. good luck in your hunt

To be completely honest, if I sold my car today I wouldnt take less than $2500 for it

So even tho I paid $1500 i guess it doesnt set the value.

I still think $3900 is alittle high tho.

I had some local honda boy mexicans (nothing racist, thats just what they were), ask me a year or so back if I wanted to sell my wagon. I said, "Yeah, you got $5k?".
