90* inlet TD04 swapped for a 90* TD05-16G (now with pics!)

Got the EL headers & ported 16G on my 4eat SS yesterday.

General impression is no more boxer sound, slightly slower spool (noticeable), no boost spikes, & noticeably better top-end than the TD04@14psi at TD05 boost levels of just 11psi.

Equal length headers and twin scroll set-ups tend to reduce the boxer sound.

is the td05 setup (pluming, intake and vaccum lines) the same as the td04? and will my stock internals withstand a Td05? (motor is completely rebuilt)

Yes and yes.
Search.

The JDM 90* inlet TD04 has the same 90* rubber elbow as the 90* inlet TD05 which is slightly different than the ej22t elbow.
I was not sure if the elbow had to be changed so I had a TD05 one ready for use just in case.
The rest of the intake pluming going toward the airbox is the same as a ej22t.

I actually took some pics of the TD04 & my spare TD05 side by side & the saw that the compressor housings were similar in size (TD04 was slightly smaller), but the TD04's turbine wheel was much smaller thant the 16G's.

? 18psi max safe boost on a EJ20G if fueling is OK...

No boxer sound = :(, but if it hauls enough ass then that's all that matters :)

well did the boxer sound go away because of the turbo or do you have equal length headers?

He has a EL headers and I believe a twin-scroll turbo which also gets rid of the boxer sound.

+1 EL headers got rid of the sound.
These headers have a double up-pipe but are not twin-scroll as the U/P from the left & U/P from right side of the motor merge right before the turbo - basically a "Y".

My 2.2E Phase II Impreza OBS-T never had the boxer sound as the factory "y" pipe is supposed to be equal length.

I think SubaruNation is going to post the TD05 & TD04 side by side comparison pictures.

looks nice. What boost level are you going to run?

Thanks, I lucked out with these turbos & they are in good condition.

Just be careful that the e-housing is not cracked when you buy a JDM 16G (Look @ the pics of the turbos upside down & you can see were my buddy TIG'd the e-housing of my 16G).
They tend to crack in the same exact place (I got 2 that were cracked in the location shown).

I plan on running wastegate pressure for day-day scooting around which looks to be 8psi, & if I leave the EVC-EZ on the car high boost will be 15psi.

If I put the OLD school EVC-II on the car I'll run 8psi base boost, 10psi-lo, 12-13psi-med, 15-17psi-hi (drag-race 1-pass mode) depending on EGT level.

UPDATE,

EGTs look OK, but spool seems too slow with the el headers.

The car is hitting 15psi @ about 37-3800rpm off a idle start (750rpm) & starts to build boost @ about 16-1700rpm.
Once the 4eat does spool the turbo it holds a steady 15psi as long as you hold the car @ WOT - no spikes, taper, or creep.

Based on the G-tech the car is .25 slower to 60MPH than the TDO4 @ 15psi, but is .6 quicker than the TD04 to 75MPH.
Max Acc G-force is recorded 1 second slower than it was on the TD04 - slow spool....
I expect 1/4mile times to improve vs the TD04 (76MPH 1/8th MPH on the track) based on the top-end improvments, but would like some of the low end response back.

I'm thinking of trying the OEM Turbo Manifold to see how it compares the to EL headers, I'm just really lazy & do not feel like getting into that install again.

I bad mouthed the headers too soon, it seems that 4000rpm is about right for max boost on a 16G/EJ20G or EJ205 based on friends with this turbo.

Which means max boost @ 37-3800RPMs is not too bad for this turbo/engine combo.

Very informing thread. Iv noticed the same things. I hit max boost at about 4000 rpm with the 16g turbo on ej22t block/ej20g heads and UE headers. To bad i just fried mine today. Hopefully it will be rebuild able.
