Can anyone fill me in on where the starter relay is on my 91 legacy turbo? this is a huge problem bacause im not able to start the car by just turning the key I have to jump the starter from the battery and my research has lead me to think its the starter relay but i have no idea where it is.

If any one has any other suggestions on what it would be causing my car not start any in put is greatly appreciated.

when I turn the key over to the start position it does not start but if I use the cable that i have that hooks to the positive terminal and the other end to the starter post and press the button on the cable it starts every time.

Are you referring to the starter solenoid?

Probably...it's on the starter

It may not be your starter solenoid. It may be your ignition key cylinder. The plastic cap on the back of them works loose with time and usually makes you have intermittent to full time starting issues.

Are you jumping the starter or are you jumping the starter solenoid? If you are jumping from the battery to the smaller cylinder attached to the starter then it is probably when I mentioned above.

I too had starting problems (my post here). After replacing everything in the cars charging/starting system, it turned out to be the ignition switch. Just something to check / replace when you're trying stuff out...

Get a multimeter and check the ignition switch operation. Use the black connector where it plugs into the harness.

I have a set of wires that starts the car i hook one plug to the positive battery terminal and the other to the little post on the starter.

I bought a new starter relay from advance auto but cannot find the relay in the car, i know the car has one because i looked it up for my car at advance. I looked in every haynes manual for early legacys looked everywhere on the car but cannot locate it.

Ill mess with the key cylinder and see what i can do.

If your car is a 5-speed, then the starter relay is bolted to the steering column/pedal assembly support under the dash.

If your car is an automatic it does not have a relay, but the circuit goes down to the inhibitor switch on the transmission.

That relay is NOT the starter relay. It is the starter interlock relay. There is a difference.

The starter does not have a separate relay. It has the BIG solenoid (relay if you will) on the starter.

This is true. But if his way of jumping the wires starts the car, then it seems like this is the circuit he should be diagnosing.
