Layoffs.

My company just let go 40 of 100something employees. No warning, just told them goodbye. This is the first time I've gone through a layoff. In my department of 16, 7 were let go- I managed to "survive" and still have a job. It was really weird, they even let my boss go.

Anyone experienced this before, it's almost like someone came through and randomly killed people. Boxes were set out in the hall for people to pack their stuff in and coworkers were running around to see if any of their friends "got it".

Times are tough, and you really notice what stuff like this happens.

Been through about 6, though I always saw them coming. Just to be prepared, use the reprieve to save up and polish your resume and look around.

never been through a big layoff like that myself. though ive been unemployed due to "lack of work" on the companys part several times. Did have a friend that worked for a now popular internet company. They cut the entire building. Just one day Security showed up and walked everyone out. with nothing but "everyone out, leave your things, your personal belongings will be mailed to you."

yeah, job security is becoming quite an issue. i havent been working for more than 5 years so i dont know what it was like in the 80s or 90s but when the economic issues in the news become reality at work, its quite depressing.
