while driving, I hear a clunking noise. The faster the car is going the louder and quicker the clunk happens. Only happens when the car is moving in any direction. Its been put on a lift and has been diagnosed as a cracked gear in the front differential. Does this sound plausable. 1990 Legacy Wagon Auto AWD

Lift it up, separate both ball joints, take the axles out of the trans and try again. It will at least confirm its not the cv joints or wheel bearings.

Did you break a axle boot?
