able to run on 2 cylinders?

i have a 90 legacy 2.2 and was wondering if there was a way to rig something up to where at highway speed i could shut down 2 cylinders to save fuel.... or will the engine even run?

If you could do it, you would barely be able to make over 70 assuming a 3.9 FD. Your required HP (approximately as I guestimated the frontal area to be 26 ^2 ft) is 36 @ 73mph. A slightly more recent year EJ22, according to a dyno chart I had of one with some insignificant performance mods, would be making 75HP at that speed (3000rpm in 5th). Knock two cylinders down and for arguments' sake halving the HP, you'll be on the line. A head wind or an incline would put the hurts on you. Not only that, you'd be putting max load on those two cylinders rather than letting 4 cylinders relax so you'd likely be using more fuel.
Sorry, but there's not much you can do with the dinosaur cars out there ... unless you want to make the car look 'funny' to the ignorant people out there, in which case, you can make some body mods for better aerodynamics.

you looking for the type of technology that turns a V8 in a 4cly and highway speeds, that would be part of computer management,
dont think that engine would go highway speeds, think about it a motorbike weighting 300-500lbs, with a 2cly engine runs at 7000rpm+++++
and thats with moving a 300-500lbs motorbike, now try to move a 2000lbs car with roughly the same amount of power if you drive this engine at 7000rpm no less 7000rpm+++++ i'd say your gunna do real internal damage to the engine.
just my opinion.

Closer to 3000#s. I used a conservative 2800 in my calculations. Aerodynamics and light weight - the car I'm building out of a Cessna should only require about 23 HP at that same 74 mph.

I think you guys are right

sadly but sounds logical and yes Saskatoon Subaru that is what I was thinking of turning the V8 into a 4cyl

Got any bright ideas? I don't care what people think I'm the one paying the fuel bill

so yeah I'm willing to try anything!

-Cover the wheel wells over. On the front, you'll have to make the cover flare out to allow the wheels to turn.
-Cover the undercarriage with flat panels as much as possible to reduce drag. OR...
-Front airdam below the bumper as close to the ground as you dare (or build spring mounts that could allow it to fold back and up when struck). Combine this with flat side skirts also going as low as possible. This should also improve handling and crosswind stability.
-Smaller rear view mirrors. Best solution would be to replace them with tiny cameras, but the laws are behind the times and don't allow it.
-Block off the grille opening - the one below the bumper is probably more than enough in every situation.
Now the more difficult...
-Wagon? Build a tapered rear off the tailgate so as to more resemble the trailing end of a teardrop. This will really attract attention and will probably make the car longer than a big SUV.
-Sedan? Easiest would probably be to build a tapered back going from the end of the roof to the end of the trunk, like a long-sloped fastback.
-Bring the flat paneling under the car up at the rear, which may require extensive modification to the rear bumper.
There are other things, but that's as reasonable as I feel necessary.

lol that would make the car look funny but good ideas!

Get an Innovative LC-1 wideband O2 sensor and an EGT gauge.
The LC-1s simulated narrowband output can be set to any voltage/lambda curve. If you set it's crossover voltage to something leaner than 14.7:1 and feed the simulated output to your factory ECU you should see some gas savings at idle and cruise. The EGT gauge is to keep you from setting it too low and skyrocketing EGTs.
I haven't actually tried this, but in theory it should work. In fact this is one of the reasons some OEMs are installing quasi-wideband O2s.

That's what it takes. If I weren't building my own car, I'd be waiting for the Aptera to be sold and to be sold outside of CA. It's one of the only intelligent vehicles that's looking to see production any time soon.

It's called a pyrometer...not an "EGT Gauge"

Yes it is. However, you knew what I meant and I'd be willing to bet that the original poster did also.

In fact I'd even go so far as to say that 'pyrometer' might have elicited a "what's that" response.

I know...sorry...that was meant in a tongue in cheek manner...I was trying to impersonate a NASIOC Nazi
It's what happens when I drink...
I shoulda included a

with it

+1 OEMs are installing widebands on some cars.
The Innovative wideband we have came with a VW/Audi 02 sensor (had the VW/Audi logo on it...) ? - which car it came from.

Yeah...when I have to replace my WB sensor I just order one for a 2002 Jetta...and then I can get it for $58 shipped instead of like $80

When you go lean of stoich, EGT's actually cool down. Under load is a different story though, since we need excess fuel for cooling under boost.
On the highway, I run about 15.5:1 with about 45 degrees of timing. I've gotten upwards of 28-29mpg i nthe summer, 24-25mpg in the winter. Driving slower helps too, as going from 65 to 80mph brings it down a bunch. Wiseco pistons help since they raised the compression to 8.5:1.

That LC-1 is sick! I bought an LM-1, and it's awesome.

I remember reading about an old volkswagen 4 cylinder that used the front two cylinders to supercharge the back two cylinders. Does that count?
