Someone Tell me the truth about timing gears.

its coming down to assembly time for my car and I need to know for sure if there is any timing gear that I need to make this work. I have heared talk of only XXX gear working but not XXX gear.

I have black plastic timing gears for my 20g heads. the pickups are in the same spot as my stock 22t gears.

The general rule is use the gears that go with the heads. Here are some pics of the EJ22T gera vs. the plastic DOHC gears. Note the timing patten is the same but shifted relative to the locating pin. the same angle shift can be seen in the sensor location.

Also not the plastic gears have magnets vs. the rasied tic marks on the metal gears. I have been told that the early sensor will work with the later magnetic gear but not the other way around, I haven't tried that yet tho.

I'm short on time right now but I will try and take some pics of heads and gears and fill in more of the blanks later.

Quoted from other thread on nastycock:
You will need metal phase I cam gear or the resin phase I cam gear from one of the following vehicles:

MY89-92 Legacy Turbo JDM
MY92-98 Impreza WRX JDM
MY96-98 Legacy/Outback EJ25D JDM or USDM
MY97-98 Impreza RS DOHC USDM

I checked the three sets of DOHC heads I have (EJ20G, ’96 EJ25 & ’97 EJ25) and all the sensors were in the same location. My EJ22T have the sensor mount rotated by the same angle as the gears show in the pic above.

It looks like there are two types of gears, SOHC and DOHC. I’m willing to bet the later WRX/STi DOHC gears are the same as the other DOHC gears. What I am not sure about is the later SOHC heads (RS/Phase II EJ25). If anyone has these gears and compare them to the pic above it would be great info to have. Note: on the DOHC gears the center line through the 3 and 2 magnet groups is in line with the locating pin for the cam.

How much you want to bet? If you were local I would make you buy me lunch.

I've got the SOHC Ej25 gear off an engine right now. I will check it for you.

so am I going to have to re locate my cam sensors? or since the pattern is the same its ok?
I guess I dont really want to hear theories, its coming time to throw my engine in and I dont want to have to rip it out again because of timing gears.

so my question is has anyone ran the plastic timing gear with any success? if so, HOW

thanks alot guys!

Use cam gears off these cars, and they will bolt on... dumbass!

I understand that, the problem is the heads I have on my car are mystery heads. they could be this they could be that, all I am trying to pinpoint is the cars that HAVE this composite timing gear, and weather or not they will work with my sensors, I know they bolt up thats not what I am asking

Do you not have 20g heads?

I have been told they are this I have been told they are that. thats really not the point, im interested in the cam gear compatibility with stock sensors, I will just throw the heads on and see what happens if nobody knows.

as long as you have a dohc head... you can use cam gears off the cars I listed without any modification to your sensor location. Subarus are like legos man.
