Error Codes

Well...I finally pulled my error codes today and got five of them.

22: Knock sensor
24: Air control Valve (is this the IAC?)
31: Throttle Position Sensor(found how to test this on Dave's? website)
45: Atmospheric Sensor
49: Air flow sensor (not too worried about this one)

can I run down the problems with the sensors with a multimeter? I finally put together the scantool that Vikash made up.

clear the codes, and drive it for a day. then list the CEL code again.

I already cleared the codes twice, the first time by connecting the green and black connectors and driving it until the CEL started flashing and the second time by unhooking the battery for 45 minutes.

After you clear the codes, immediately check them again. If you have the same codes, you more then likely didn't clear them.

When you did the green & black connectors, did you get a steady flashing after driving for a little while?

no. So when you first hook them up, the CEL is off when you start driving and then after about a minute of driving it starts flashing. But it started flashing the error codes again instead of a steady flashing. I figured it hadn't reset the codes so then i tried unplugging the battery for a while.

I'm pretty sure i fixed the throttle position sensor since the wires had snapped off of the harness and it ran horrible until i found them and put a new harness on. But yeah, error code is still stored. Could not driving above 10mph cause that? It took me about a minute just to get out of my driveway. About the time i get to the bottom of my driveway, it starts flashing.

Check spoon's post: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=35771

"The silver lining? I learned from the dealer that I can clear the engine codes by removing the

positive battery cable and jumping it to the negative battery terminal, which will drain the

ECU capacitors and reset the computer."

Doesn't vrg3's scan tool give you an option screen to clear codes? Try this 1st if so, then try the method above if no luck.

Since I'm a relative newbie I'd feel better if u checked w/other members 1st though before trying the above. I'd hate to be the cause of your blowing your ecu even though the above method seems harmless.

As in carpentry, measure 2x but cut once, and better safe than sorry.

I didn't see a thing in Vikash's scantool to clear the codes.

Interesting post, I soldered mine when it broke and didn't have any problems with it for a while. I might cut the shrinkwrap and see if it's still good since the engine bay tends to get pretty hot.

Tried clearing the codes again and they just will not clear...frustrating.

It may be that only the stand alone scan tool has the "clear codes" option. If the laptop scan tool parallels the stand alone then after either the coolant temp screen (default on the stand alone) or before the stored trouble code screens there is an option to clear.

Check vrg3's posts on the scan tool (sticky electrical) and see it there's not something about clearing codes. I may be wrong but I think I remember something about it. Also check his dl site at graphics.cornell.edu etc.

Wish I could be of more help. I'll check w/a buddy of mine that may have an answer for u.

I ran the D-check and got only a knock sensor code and a code 51 something about a neutral switch.

Knock sensor failures are probably more common than charcoal canister valve failures. Get a new one!

I checked the resistance of the knock sensor and it's good. I'm gonna pick up some shielded wire and rewire the knock sensor since the wire on it snapped a while back.

alrighty...I went to radioshack this morning and picked up some microphone wire and redid the knock sensor back a foot or soo and connected the ground shield wires in the segments. Started the car and the CEL is no longer there. Codes still wont clear but who cares.

The laptop version will not clear codes, only the stand alone.

I had trouble clearing my codes too, the stand alone was the only way I could do it.

and Bam! Out comes the engine for a probable chinese crap rod bearing. I love this car...I'm really not excited to be pulling this engine apart for the 4th time in two months.

It gets to be real frustrating when you spend more time wrenching than driving. I can commiserate with you on that. Good luck man.
