Dudes... rebuilding an EJ22 n/a (piston question) and . . .

I'm wondering if I can use...

NPR (Nippon Piston Ring LTD) pistons and rings ?

Here is the Ebay ad for a complete piston and ring set including the option for an oversized set:

Here is the NPR website
http://www.npr.co.jp/english/index.html

1stSubaru ( https://www.1stsubaruparts.com/ ) wants around $60.00 per OEM piston and that's only with the pin and circlip.... no rings.

There's a fairly substantial savings by going with NPR-brand pistons/rings but I don't know if NPR is of the same quality as OEM (I don't know what the OEM brand is). I'll find out next week what condition the cylinders are in before I order the actual pistons so I have some time to research.

Thanks dudes,

Chester

As long as it's for the application, I don't see why you couldn't use it.

However I can't really say anything about NPR's quality and fitment.

NPR is OEM for Toyota and a bunch of other companies. I don't see why they wouldn't be quality, I'll probably end up getting some too, i need higher comp pistons for my ej22t/ej25 dohc hybrid ...

cheers,

Joe Dude,

That sounds like my next project after getting this EJ22 n/a rebuilt to stock specifications. What's your final "winning combo" going to be? What's the engine management going to be?

you'll probably want to bore .020 over when getting aftermarket pistons;

this is just from memory, but I'm pretty sure subaru OEM pistons have an A, B or C stamped on them which matches them to the equivalent cylinder..

the stamping denotes a size difference, something to do with cylinder size and tolerance between the cylinder wall and the piston.

I'm taking the case in to a machine shop on Monday to see what they have to say. No.4 cylinder has some scuffing/grooves near the top (closest to the valves) and so I'll probably end up getting all the cylinders re-bored. The NPR pistons come in two sizes... stock and .020 oversize; so that looks like where I'm headed.
