My car is starting to smell like old oil...

how hard is it to change the valve cover gaskets on my Subie.

i've change them on a V8, is it much different, except there are twice as
many and they're laying on their sides.

neoprene or OEM or paper or cork any ideas

Gord, I would suggest going with the OEM gasket, actually it is more like an
O-ring than a gasket. The valve covers have a groove that the seal fits into
that mates to a flat surface on the head. Be sure to get new seals for under
the bolts that hold the valve covers to the heads as well. It is somewhat
difficult to get the covers off the motor due to limited space, not much fun
but doable
