Say you were going to rebuild....
What would be the best, cheap way of doing this and what parts would you use?
I'm trying to figure out what it will cost as I'd like to at some point in the not too distant future rebuild my ej22t,but need to know what all that entails and where to get the parts from.

As for what's wrong,I'm not sure there is anything wrong, there is a slight knock coming from somewhere low on the drivers side after the radiator hose broke and it overheated a bit. I haven't been running it since so I don't know that anything is wrong or if the sound will go away when that problem has been fixed. I'm not even sure of what I heard as the exhaust has seen better days and it could just be rattling. I'll know more in a few days.
Budget? I'd like to stay cheapish, dunno, whatever it takes to make it very reliable without getting too spend happy. Goals,I want to freshen the engine up and keep the car around for a long time, maybe put some sturdy parts in there for when I feel like giving it more than stock boost.

Bearings $150
Gasket set $200ish
New rings $60-150 (I have used NA rings in the turbo pistons successfully multiple times)
Keep the stock pistons if you are not going over 250-275 whp, but instead invest in a piggyback (PP6 or emanage)
New clutch while you are at it.
cylinder head upgrade or just get them rebuilt

Don't rebuild unless you need to. If you're going to rebuild you should do the stuff that make sense, like clutch, and other stuff. It's stupid not to, and then have to go back and do it a couple months or even a year down the road.

A full engine gasket kit is $200.
If you need bearings, call Calico. Baddass coated bearings for about $160. They supply Cobb.
I reccommend a clutch while you are in there. If the rear oil baffle plate is the platic POS, get the aluminum one for $20. You'll want a hand impact driver for that, as they make life easy.
Timing belt ~ $60. A kit with all the pulleys is around $300.
Rings = ?
If you are gonna get a piggyback, look into the MAF Translater Pro.

I just rebuilt mine PM me if you have any specific questions just PM me.
I bought the topline engine rebuild kit which comes with basically everything and I think it was like $450, plus I bought a set of pistons which were optional but they were like $600. The rebuild of the block and everything was like $300. All together I spent like $3,000 on the car.

that is pretty cool of you to share that with us.Saskatoon Subaru wrote:i did a rebuild recently, heres my parts list in Canadian funds.
i can see some ways to cut some of the cost depending on the condition of the current parts. that is a really comprehensive list.
