Defective damper

I'm tearing an EJ22T apart for rebuild and was surprised to find that the damper pulley is defective. There is a huge slot of metal missing next to the key way. The key was actually getting worn away because of the small contact area.

I can't tell if you're being sarchastic or not.
This issue is due to not torquing the crank pulley properly. The pulley comes loose and eats the key and/or the keyway. If that's all you had happen, you got away pretty good.

No sarchasim, Josh. The missing area is rusty so I figured it wasn't there when the engine was assembled. It definetely wasn't working that huge slot recently.
I bought the car, wrecked, just for the engine. It's not the original engine and I forget what the mileage was supposed to be. The cylinder walls still have the hone markings, but then, I have a 2.5 with 165,000 miles that I tore apart and the hone marks are just visible on that one, too.
I only drove the car around the back of the house until I was ready to pull the engine and then around front into the garage. I supposed it could have had "experience" with a loose bolt in its earlier life.
