Wow its been a long time since I posted here, guess I switched to keeping the legacy reliable and stopped tweaking things. She's still running great, a few hundred miles from 200,000. Problem is gas prices are murder and I've been thinking about getting some kind of sport bike (even though insurance would take up all the money i'd save on gas)

I've heard all kinds of "start with a 250, no start with a 600" so I was just wondering if anyone rides/and or has any advice.

Just toying with the idea, and I'm up for learning how to do something new as well.

I've been thinking about getting a motorcycle license and getting the new Ninja 250. I hate Kawasakis (they're like the Ford of motorcycles), but they're the only ones who make a 250 sportbike in the US. I'm by no means a hardcore biker of any sort, but that Ninja 250 gets 75mpg... and while I'm not insecure about myself, I draw the line at riding a Vespa

A friend of a friend just recently got one and loves it. Says it'll do 105mph, which is pretty good for a 250.

I'd agree with the start-with-the-250 advice, but I'd suggest buying a used one dirt-cheap, as you'll likely outgrow it pretty quick and want something faster.

The revised Ninja 250R, its first update in 22 years, has a much more usable powerband and is even more of a beginner-friendly bike than it ever was. I totally support it.

that depends on if youve ever ridden bikes before, if you havent then start slow with something like a 250.

Thanks for the feedback guys . I'm going to take the MSF once my new job starts and then I think i'll just go from there. I do agree that that ninja 250 looks pretty good (and from what I hear keep their trade in value pretty well)....but so does a GSX-R600, lol.

I wouldn't know anything. My first (and only) bike was an 800.

just take the msf, wear your gear, and ride smart/within your ability and you'll be fine. if youre into sport bikes i'd start on something light and with a smooth powerband like a sv650, ninja 500, GS500E, etc. don't go buying a newer, nicer bike for your first one since youll probably end up crashing it. supermotos and dual sports are a lot of fun and generally forgiving to new riders. if you like older bikes there are a shitload of good beginner ones.
