So..I've blown the bushings in my center driveshaft bearing.

Due to heat.

It had to happen sometime. These are just the mounting bushings to the body; I tried stacking washers but that didn't help due to the wrong size washers...

Little backstory. I've only got a downpipe attached, exhaust dumps somewhere between the middle and the rear of the front doors; approximately one foot away from the center bearing.

I pulled the bolts on the bearing and let it slack a little, it did not appear there was any damage or slop in the bearing itself; just the rubber bushings that hold it to the body.

Can I source these bushings and replace them separately? or am I looking at a full driveshaft replacement? I tried to remove what was left of one bushing but it appeared to be a stamped metal/rubber stacking and I only ended up peeling one layer of the metal/rubber stack off of the bushing - it seemed to be the improper way to do things.

If I can do just the bushings, does anyone have a part number? I'm about to start digging around on Legacy777's website with FSM's but not sure I can find one.

The other thing is, I'm wondering what the danger is to replacing these bushings with an equivalent stacking of washers of the proper fit? (the bushing hole is about an inch in diameter, so I'd have to find washers that seat on the bolt and on the mounting plate properly..)

The heat source won't go away (not anytime soon anyway) so I'm afraid by just putting new bushings in they'll melt away just the same.. granted, the current ones have lasted 180 thousand miles plus six months of 600F+ heat - so I guess it was a good go.

Alternatively I can probably slather them with high-temp RTV which will stand up to the heat some...

thoughts? need answers before mid-day Monday. I've got some stuff on order with SGP/SubieGal since late Friday I want to get this in if I can before my stuff ships out.

Well...

I found the partnumbers in the book, but I couldn't get the order in with SubaruGenuineParts before my other order shipped out (they're a fast bunch)

went by the hardware store and picked up some 3/4", 5/8" and 1/4" washers. I think I stacked a 1/4" followed by a 3/4", then a 3/4" and a 1/4" on the bolt in place of the bushing, added loctite and was done with it.

will report back if it blows up.. but here's for hoping?

Wow, with all the replies it's a wonder I can get a word in edgewise.

Mild vibration between 35MPH and 45MPH, not unexpected really as the bushings were there for a reason - I think I can live with it, don't think it'll have any negative effect on the bearing but I'm open to opinions...
