weird noise been going on for a while

so for a while ive had the really hard knock near the tranny when i turn my wheel and drive either forwards or in reverse sounds like and popping axle but ten times louder almost like someones ramming into the back of my car
thoughts?
center diff maybe?

Check the driveshaft for a busted U-joint.

Is it an automatic? If so I vote torque bind.

The automatic having problems is more likely. You can visually inspect the driveshaft joints next time you're under the car.
