With the correct offset and some serious rolling you could run a 235.

I had 225s with mildly rolled fenders on a +53 16x7.
After significant rolling/pulling there was plenty of room for a 235. This was on 04 sti suspension, which has more room between the tire and strut than stock.

If you get some older STI rims and mount 235/40-17 on it you will have no fender mods to do, on stock 92-94 suspension.
Your camber however will have to be neutral or zero.
Works for me.
225/50-16's mounted on 2000 Legacy GT rims is what I run during the summer.

You're able to get away with a 225 of a 6.5" rim?

My 16" rims aren't 6.5" wide. I think they are 7.5 wide. I don't remember. They fit just fine

If you're running a 2000 Legacy GT rim, and it's 16" dia., it's only 6.5" wide. They definately are NOT 7.5" wide.
Subaru never produced a stock 16" rim wider than 7" and the only ones to my knowledge that are 7" are the 98-01 RS rims.
Even the WRX 16" rims are only 6.5" wide.
Maybe I'm wrong though?
I don't mean to sound pushy, I was just surprised that you could squeeze a 225 on a 6.5 inch rim.

I stand corrected, today I went in for steel winter rims, I'm running 225 wide winter tires. The rims they brought out are for a WRX car, they are 6.5 " wide. I questioned this as to why are they not at least seven inches wide. So they checked their book for tire mount limits, and 225 tire is the last one listed that can be mounted on this rim. to my supprise a 16"x6.5" rim will house a 225 tire. Wow!Which now calls in to question my aluminum rims from a GT Leggy. How wide are they really?
...To be continued.
