donut on downpipes?

so i just realized that none of the wrx downpipes seem to have the donut flanges on them, yet the catback exhausts do.
can you still use the donut with the other style of flange without it leaking exhaust everywhere? or will i have to change the flange on my catback and add a flex somewhere once i get a downpipe?
just curious what you guys did...
