My EJ253 continues to struggle

OK, so I've started a new thread because the fun just never stops.
I had a cylinder 4 misfire issue a couple weeks ago and I tacked on some questions to this thread:
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=36196
Since then I had a friend with an Outback come over and I swapped the cylinder 4 wire. After doing so the engine ran pretty good, so I put my old cyliner 4 wire back on and the engine immediately started to misfire again. Prolem solved. Got new Kingsborne wires and cleared the CEL. By the way, the Kingsborne wires did not *click* onto the plugs (NGK) like the OEM wires did. The packaging even says to listen/feel for the click. Very bothersome.
Anyway, engine has been running fine without any misfires and no CEL so far.
However, I still have a rough idle problem. This is where things get interesting...
In testing the engine after I put the new wires in I really loaded the engine and raced it pretty hard. WOT up to 5500+ RPM with the window down to listen to the engine. At about 4000 RPM I noticed a very wierd sound that I've never heard before. I heard a sound that was like a compressed air being let out of a tank with a whistle. It was a continuous air pressure whistle above 4000 RPM. This does not occur below that RPM range and does not occur when revving the engine in neutral. I know some of you may be thinking its part of the body whistling with increased airflow at higher speed. I'm sure it's not that though, it was much more dramatic.
This leads me to think its a vacuum issue since I have rough idle too. I've read a crap load of posts about similar issues but nothing that totally addresses this. Could it be PCV or IAC? I have not checked the hoses yet, but I'm going to do that tonight. Rough idle has been happening for a couple years, but this is the first time I've heard that noise.
