Well it can be a 1990 but made in 1989. My car is a 1993 according to the manual, yet on the side it is a 1992.

it's still a 1990 model year
just as you can buy magazines slightly before the month of "issue", cars are made in advance so that they can be sold throughought the year
you always see the next model year go on sale the fall before hand. 2009s should be available for purchase any time now
so you call it what it is: a 1990 model that rolled off the line in October of 1989

Some cars even go on sale in the spring of the year before their model year. I know Pontiac Solstices were available that early (though fairly exclusively).

It's a mostly outdated practice and being ignored in some cases today, but the reason for it is to allow for shipping times and to build up inventories for the model year. Shipping today is fast enough now to make it irrelevant. I think manufacturer announced on-sale dates use the same idea on a shorter time scale since I routinely see cars with civilian plates on the road months before they're supposed to officially go on sale. A CEO who had a boat at the marina I worked at got a 6-series convertible 3 months before they were supposed to officially be on sale.

It's all in your VIN dude. If the 10th digit in your VIN is an L, then you have a 1990.

usually with any car manufactor and with subaru if the month is over june or 6 (in case you guys dont know your months jk) the car is the proceeding year for example if its 10/89 like yours the year is 1990 10/89 is when they started assembling the car it depends on when they made the car this is why you see 2009 cars starting to come out such as the camaro, challenger, and GTR etc

I read somewhere that the new Camaro (2010) is going on sale April of next year.
