As it turns out... Our cars aren't so often stolen... I was reading the 2007 top ten most stolen vehicles... not one was under Subaru's make... So I then went to a top 100 list... and STILL! I'm guessing they know subaru owners love their cars and theft will most likely result in dead people!

In 2002 had a fwd 5pd L stolen from me once, It was for sale in this consignment car lot, but one door didn't lock... so he just had to jimmy the ignition... I knew it was this neighborhood punk that lived like a few blocks away. He had asked about the car and test drove it...

I knew it was out of fuel, so I called up to the gas station by my house and said, "if my lil blue car comes in here, let me know, thanks." hehe, it's nice to know people...

I almost sat and waited at the car lot, thinking it was probably a joy ride, but went on home for a bit.

Sure enough, this kid pulled in, putting fuel in it *used the last 1/16th of a tank doing burnouts, judging by how much tire was gone..* and once she took his money, she's said, "so how long have you had that car? When he didn't answer for a few seconds, thinking she was onto him... "oh... well that's too bad, because I know a guy thats probably going to kick your ass any minute now... and I think I'll just call the cops.. see which one gets to you first..."

needless to say, he brought drove it the block away to the lot, leaving the lights on... and parked like half way in it's original spot...

my car was stolen and brought back... in FEAR MUAHAHAHA
with:
1/2 tank of fuel... $2.30/gallon at the time though.
Both front tires worn beyond the belts..
C-V knuckles clicking.
front and rear bumper full of grass/dirt.

Was originally selling car for $650... it went for $600 after I replaced the tires with decent used ones.. :P

I guess that torture test was what made me fall in love with my $500 subaru, I merely put a windshield in the car and drove it after purchase and it never let me or the car thief down.. :P

Old Subarus didn't sell to a demographic that would buy hot parts and they hardly broke anyway. They weren't performance cars (or known as such), so weren't a joy ride attraction, the parts only swap amongst each other, and they traditionally only sold in snow belt states in small volumes for a mainstream manufacturer. They were also slightly harder to break into compared to their competitors or much more valuable cars. The demographic that bought them were also unlikely to have anything of value in them like expensive stereos and such, though tufts of dog hair and dried drool was probably common with wagons.

is it bad that I spent 16x as much as I spent for mine, on wheels and tires? :-D

And I wonder why I have an alarm

Hondas and Acuras tend to go for relatively high amounts at the police auctions here subaru's are still relatively unpopular with the police auction crowd.

I never saw subarus at the open auction in SanDiego... I saw a delorean, classic mustang, tons of volvos and shit loads of honda types... I'm betting that since the cars were mostly donations, people dont just give away a subaru! :P

Why the hell would some one give away a Delorean?

I've seen a Lamborghini Espada, 1968 Checker wagon, Maserati Ghibli, AMX, and some others donated for auction.

yeah, if they've a few problems, it's one heck of a write-off.. or people just are that damned nice to donate something that'd make money for kids!

Someone broke into my 94. I was pissed.

Subaru's are notoriously easy to break into. But only a few people seem to care.

Yeah, I locked myself out a month ago, it took me less than a min to get into the car. I just squeezed my arm into the window and opened the door. All it cost me was some skin.

I wonder if cars like that can be written off tax-wise for a greater value than the car could probably get in the market due to them being off the KBB, but considered collectible. The Lamborghini, for example, would struggle to get $25k, but with no set value in a look-up table anywhere the donation could probably be listed as 30-35k and nobody would question it. Or does the IRS go by its eventual auction sale price? That would seem to discourage donations and create even more paperwork (not that the latter ever stopped them).

Actually, California started working on giving a fairly standardized write off as I was leaving in 2005. I think they've either capped the donation ceilling or put a regulatory amount on make/models... People were claiming to donate audi quattros, but failing to mention a blown engine... and stuff like that..

I think that was a Federal thing, or coincides with it, as I heard a similar thing from an accountant around here. The donated cars I mentioned I saw about 15 years ago or more.

ah, yeah, theres always someone ruining it, causing regulation in generally most things...
