my timing belt exp.

Post by RJ93SS »

so my car leaks oil like a bitch, right on to the exhaust at the front of the engine, car now has 119,000 km on it, and the timing belt is stock which means it's about 20,000 km overdue.

so i ripped it allapart with a buddy, first by finding top dead centre, to do this we lined the crank pulley line up with 0* timing, not sure if this is the proper way but it worked, cracked the nut by turning the engine slightly while i held a socket on it, then pulled the pulley off and lined the crank properly then lined the cam's with there marks tightened everything upnad started it, ran perfect, oh yeah and we changed the seals, pass. side was a bitch. then we put the cover back on and i took off home and then to seattle, 250miles, and back to pick up a 06 ic. anyways, this was all yesterday, today on the way to work my engine died, wtf. i

i pulled the left and right covers and noticed chunks of the tb cover rubber gasket which had been stretched out and did not go on properly. i did not have time to take it all apart but i'm thinking the belt slipped from the chunks getting caught in it?//

my other question is where can i find a new gasket for the tb cover,

comment and thoughts appreciated, thanks ryan

Be glad your engine is still stock and non-interference. I built an Ej20G/Ej22T hybrid for a guy a few years back and he did the same thing with the upper gasket on the cover. It got sucked into the DS cam gear, skipped his timing about 10 degrees and the engine ate itself. Snapped off two intake valve on one cylinder and banged them into the piston on the other.

You should be able to just take it all apart and put it back together again. Any dealer with have the gasket and at least here in Colorado, everytime I've needed one, Napa has had them in stock.

you mean an accessory belt wobbles? Or the timing belt...

The crank pulley on these cars are notorious for coming apart (some two-piece design, the rubber cush between them weakens and it starts to wobble).

Or, the crank is bent, bearing hogged out.... something

my timing belt has a wobble, you can already see wear marks on the cam sprockets cause the belt, could it be a tensioner or something?
thanks Ryan

Something's very likely warped or a thrust bearing is gone. Watch it while it's running and it should become apparent which potential problem is the culprit. You might have to operate the throttle a little while you're looking.

make sure you locktite the main pulley bolt and torque it tight like 140ftlb. Dont want to hear you rounded the keyway on the harmonic pulley. Lol

i didnt round the key, but i did take the car to my mechanic and he said that it's okay to wobble or walk a little but he recommended changing my water pump and my all my rollers, especially if you drive it hard. i think i will try these things and hopefully it works out, thanks for all your guys help, let me know if you have any more thoughts. thanks Ryan
