Engine swap on a 94 Legacy

I need to get a new engine for my 94 Legacy. The old one caught on fire last weekend... I need to bring the car back to live ASAP.
What is easier to do: 1) to make a hybrid engine with 2.5 short block and 2.2 heads, or 2) to put the entire 2.5 engine in this car? I have a very limited budget at the moment... My car has a manual tranny; is it ok if I pull an engine out of a car with AT?

I'm assuming your 94 Legacy is non-turbo. Is this correct?

If the old engine caught on fire, the harness will probably be questionable, which makes it more difficult to make a hybrid to work with your existing ECU.

I don't really have any other comments. This has been talked about before. Jason Grahn did a 2.5 swap into his 90 legacy. You may want to search and see what he ran into.

The engine did not suffer from the fire, only headers were in flames. Not quiet sure what happened to the oil pump and why all that oil ended up on the exhaust. I was driving on the highway when I lost most of the power and 30 seconds later there was a smoke cover behind my car. :-D It lost about 2-3 quarts of oil in 2 minutes that I had to drive before I stopped. I pulled the engine out the other day and took apart all the timing gear, everything looks good if you ignore all that oil mess. The engine has seen too much with me behind the steering wheel, so I decided to replace it instead of fixing it. Most likely I'll get an EJ251 for my car.
